GLASSBORO, NJ -
Matt Hendrickson scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime to lift the 19th-ranked Rowan University men's soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 win over NJAC rival Montclair State before a packed crowd at the Rowan Soccer Stadium.
Â
Hendrickson took the cross from
Alex Ferrara on a corner and headed it into the center of the net at 104:58. It was the junior's third goal of the season.
Â
"It was a play we work on in practice and typically I stay at the top of the box and wait for anything that comes out at the 18. And something in me just told me I was going to score if I went in so I listened to my gut and put it in the back of the net," said Hendrickson.
Â
"We put him (Matt) in for a reason because at any given second he can do that. He has three goals this year and they're all in the last minute of a half or an overtime period and he's had some big goals. So we're not surprised," said head coach
Scott Baker.
Â
The Profs went ahead, 2-1, early in the second half when freshman
Jay Vandermark scored on a blast from outside the box at 46:31, after he took a short pass from
Wilby Alfred. It was Vandermark's team-high eighth goal this year.
Â
Montclair State scored the equalizer at 78:33 as Oscar Sanchez tallied his second of the game, taking a low cross from Stefan Koroman and putting it into lower right corner.
Â
The Red Hawks got on the board first at 19:29 as Sanchez dribbled around a few defenders and moved across the box, sending a shot into the lower right corner for the unassisted goal.
Â
Rowan tied the game at 35:52 on a diving header by
Modou Sowe.
Leo Montesinos sent a low cross from the right side and Sowe dove and connected just before he hit the ground, sending it inside the right post.
Â
"This is a great win and every NJAC game is a challenge and it's a war. The teams are great and the rivalries are there every single time. We have to come out Wednesday and do it all over again against Stockton," said Baker.
Â
Rowan held a 19-14 edge in shots while goalkeeper
James Weinberg made five saves.
Â
Rowan improves to 5-1-3 (1-0-1 NJAC) while playing its fifth overtime match of the season and Montclair State is now 7-4 (0-2 NJAC).
Â
The Profs will be back in action on Wednesday, October 2, when they take on Stockton in an NJAC contest at 7 p.m. at the Rowan Soccer Stadium.
