FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Jay Vandermark scored late in the second overtime to lead the Rowan men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Mary Washington and send the Profs into the "Sweet 16" of the 2019 NCAA Division III Championship.
 
Rowan (12-5-4) will travel to top-ranked Amherst College (16-1-2) for the round of 16 on Saturday, November 23 at 11 a.m.
 
Wilby Alfred set up the goal, carrying the ball up the left side and feeding a breaking Vandermark into the box, and the freshman put it in at 102:08 for his 12^th goal and fourth gamewinner of the season.
 
Host team Mary Washington (14-4-4) opened the scoring, just four minutes into the contest, as Jacob Lovinger picked up a loose ball in the box.
 
The Profs tied it before halftime as Jake Logar scored after taking a throw-in from Matt Fahey, at 38:51.
 
Alfred gave the Profs a 2-1 lead at 60:35, when he took advantage of a misplay by the UMW defense. Gabriel Soriano kept the Eagles alive, scoring the equalizer at 77:02 by knocking in a rebound off Rowan goalkeeper James Weinberg.
 
"This team is special. Our best is in front of us this season. We are getting better and better as we advance and I'm so proud of these guys," said head coach Scott Baker.
 
The teams played a scoreless first overtime with neither registering a shot, and Vandermark's goal was the only shot of the second extra period. Weinberg had three saves on the day while UMW's Kenny Kurtz made five.
 
It was the second overtime contest in the NCAA's for Rowan as they battled Salve Regina in the first round and advanced after winning the round of penalty kicks.
 
This is the furthest the Profs have advanced in the NCAA's since they reached the Quarterfinals in 2001.
