FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Rowan men's soccer team advanced in the NCAA Championship by way of a shootout, converting four penalty kicks, to defeat Salve Regina, 1-0, in the first round at Grass Stadium. The Profs will now meet the University of Mary Washington in the second round on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The teams played through 110 scoreless minutes until the match had to be decided in the shootout. Rowan senior
Modou Sowe scored on the Profs' second attempt, followed by
Matt Fahey and
Alex Ferrara on the third and fourth attempts. Rowan goalkeeper
James Weinberg had stopped Salve Regina's first two shots, but Evan McDonald got the Seahawks on the board, cutting their deficit to 3-2.
Rich Ventura scored on the next shot for Salve Regina, but senior co-captain
Ryan Logar sealed the win for Rowan as he gave the Profs a 4-2 edge in the shootout and sent them to the second round.
"The team showed great heart today. Were were four players down (accumulation of cards) and had several players step up and get it done for the team," said coach
Scott Baker. "The coaching staff is proud of the team's effort and resiliency and we are all excited and confident for tomorrow."
The teams were even throughout the match, with each taking nine shots and goalkeepers Weinberg for Rowan, and Nathan Reid for Salve Regina, each making three saves.
Rowan is now 11-5-4 while Salve Regina ends its season at 14-4-4.
