ROWAN PROFS (2-5; 2-2 NJAC)
vs. MONTCLAIR STATE RED HAWKS (3-4; 2-2 NJAC)
Rowan is back at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium to host Montclair State for the first time since the Homecoming win over Kean on October 12.
The Series
The Rowan-Montclair State series is tied (with TCNJ) as the most played in Profs history, with 58 games. MSU has won three in a row and four of the last five in the series. Rowan's last win vs. the Red Hawks came on Sept. 26, 2015 here in Glassboro.
About the Profs
Rowan is coming off a 21-14 win at William Paterson and is 2-2 in the NJAC. The Profs are 2-0 against teams from New Jersey this year.
About Montclair State
The Red Hawks are coming off a tough 20-17 overtime loss to #15 Wesley, which snapped their two-game winning streak. MSU held a 14-7 halftime lead but saw Wesley score with :38 left to force the overtime. The Red Hawks converted a field goal in the extra period but then Wesley scored a touchdown on the next possession to earn the victory. Head coach Rick Giancola is a 1968 Glassboro State graduate and played for Profs' head coach Richard Wackar.
Home Sweet Home
The Profs own a 16-11 record at home in the last six years (counting this one) and are 1-2 this season. Rowan has just one more home contest to go, with the season finale against TCNJ on November 16.
Defender of the Week
Mike Mascioli was named the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week for his role in the William Paterson win. The sophomore made a team-high 14 tackles, with 11 solos, as well as 3.5 tackles for losses while grabbing the game-saving interception with under two minutes to play. He leads the Profs in tackles this year with 56, including a team-best 28 solos. Mascioli was Rowan's second defensive honoree this season as
Sunny Tapp earned it on Oct. 13.
Last Time vs. Montclair State
Montclair State stormed out to a 28-0 first-half lead en route to a 28-14 win over Rowan in the last meeting on Nov. 3, 2018. The Profs got on the board in the fourth quarter as
Elijah Rehm reeled in a 73-yard pass from
Riley Giles, and finished the game with five catches for 104 yards.
Last Time Out
Rowan scored 21 unanswered points en route to a 21-14 win at William Paterson on the road. William Paterson owned a 7-0 lead at halftime but the Profs did all of their scoring in the third quarter, with three straight touchdowns, including one on a fumble recovery.
Mike Husni connected with
Nick Grosso for a 38-yard touchdown at 11:31 as the Profs used seven plays to go 62 yards.
Kameron Kennedy then intercepted a pass by Tracy Fudge to set up the Profs' next score as they went four plays ending with a 30-yard run by
Elijah Rehm at 7:21. Freshman
Jajuan Hays scooped up a WP fumble on the kickoff at the six-yard line and ran it in for the score at 7:12. After WP had pulled to within 21-14 in the fourth quarter, Rowan's defense stopped the Pioneers, forcing them to punt with under five minutes to go. WP had another possession starting at 2:05, but sophomore
Mike Mascioli intercepted a pass to seal the victory and allow the Profs to run out the clock. Rowan did so, helped by a 13-yard run from
Messiah Divine.
Very Special Teams
Coach Accorsi credited Rowan's defense and special teams as coming up big in the William Paterson win.
Mike Mascioli had 11 solo tackles, 3.5 tackles for losses and the game-saving interception while freshman
Jajuan Hays scooped up a William Paterson fumble on the kickoff after Profs' score and ran it in six yards for a touchdown.
Tom Brennan had eight punts on the day, with 47 yards being his longest, and hit five of them inside the 20 and K
Jake Hurler had four kickoffs averaging 59.0 yards.
Tale of Two Halves
At William Paterson, Rowan had just 50 offensive yards in the first half, and only one first down, but compiled 155 yards and nine first downs in the second half.
Reversal of Fortune
Freshman RB
Jajuan Hays had a strong game on special teams at William Paterson. But early on, he fumbled as he headed into end zone, allowing WP to stop the Profs' drive. Hays definitely made up for it in the second half, however, when he scooped up a WP fumble on the kickoff and ran it in six yards for Rowan's third touchdown of the game.
Money in the Bank
Freshman PK
Jake Hurler has made 21-of-22 PATs and ranks third in the NJAC at 95.5 percent. He converted seven extra points in the 52-7 win over Kean.
Making an Impact
The Profs have partnered with Team Impact, a national organization that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with local college athletic teams. This year's Rowan "recruit" for Team Impact is Matthew Pollard, a 15-year old with cystic fibrosis. The Profs officially "signed" Matthew on October 25 in a ceremony after practice.
