Men's Soccer Scores Late To Win Over Randolph-Macon, 1-0

ASHLAND, VA – The Rowan University men's soccer team pushed past Randolph-Macon College in a close hard-fought match, winning by a final score of 1-0. The Profs move to 2-1 on the year, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 2-1.

It was a defensive battle for most of the contest until the 82nd minute, when Rowan's midfielder Kevin Primich (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Allentown) ripped a shot off a volley from outside the 18-yard to the top left corner to go ahead. The Yellow Jackets had one last chance to tie the game as defender Dylan Ogletree (so. La Plata, MD/La Plata) fired off a shot, but it was blocked. The Brown and Gold controlled the remaining eight minutes of play to hold onto the victory.

Both teams went toe-to-toe in the first half, as each side had a scoring opportunity within the first two minutes of action. Forward Ryan Campbell (sr. Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) started hot as he had back-to-back shots, but was turned away by Randolph-Macon's goalie Brian Breslin (sr. Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson)

The Brown and Gold found some trouble late, as the Yellow Jackets applied heavy offensive pressure to the defense. It started with a shot by forward Ruben Niamien (so. Fredericksburg, VA/Chancellor) that was saved and followed by an unsuccessful corner attempt.

The Profs controlled the second half, as they only allowed three total shots during the final 45 minutes. The best chance Randolph-Macon had to score was in the 50th minute, when midfielder Anthony Astruc (jr. Glen Allen, VA/Benedictine) had a good look at net, but sent his shot wide. Rowan kept the pressure up to eventually wear the Yellow Jackets' defense down. In the 81st minute, Campbell flipped the ball over a defender to set up an open shot on goal, but it was saved. On the following rebound, forward Shane Doherty (sr. Delran, NJ/Delran) hit a one-time shot near post, but that was turned aside by Breslin to set the Profs up for the corner kick opportunity that they capitalized on.

Goalie Kyle Dennis (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) finished the game with three saves inside the cage to give him his second shutout on the year.

The Rowan University men's soccer team travels to Camden, NJ for the Cialella Soccer Classic, where it will face Emory University in the opening match on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 2 pm.
