GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team defeated Kean University, 76-67 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
Guard/forward
Alex Raring (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) led the way with 17 points. Guards
Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) and
Olivia Rulon (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) contributed with 13 points apiece. Center
April Szymczyk (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. It was her fifth on the season. Guard
Dominique Peters (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) added seven points and six boards.
The Profs are 13-9 overall and 10-6 in the conference. The Cougars have a 9-13 record with a 6-10 NJAC mark.
For Kean, forward/center De'Mean Bond (so. Paterson, NJ/John F. Kennedy) totaled 14 points and six rebounds. Guard Payce Lange (so. Tewksbury, NJ/Voorhees) scored 13 points and guard Danielle Oakley (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) followed with 12. Forward/guard Cindy Foresta (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) had eight points and seven rebounds.
The Profs were ahead 48-34 at halftime. Rulon's jumper made the score 50-34 at 9:29 in the third quarter. The Cougars answered with a 12-2 surge to cut the deficit to six (52-46) with 3:51 left. Five different players scored in the run. Rulon (3:41) and guard
Samantha Tello (so. Elmwood Park, NJ/St. Mary's) (2:22) each sank two foul shots to lead 56-46. Peters' free throw with 55 seconds left ended the scoring with Rowan up 57-48.
In the final period, Szymczyk had two points at the line (6:53) for a 15-point advantage (65-50). Tello's layup (2:31) made the score 69-59. Kean trailed by five (69-64) with 1:04 on the clock after five straight points. Bond and Oakley each had a basket while guard Brielle Colgero (jr. East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) hit a free throw. The Cougars were down by four points (71-67) after Colgero's three-pointer (0:39). Rowan ended the game making five of six foul shots. There were two lead changes and two ties in the first quarter. Guard Latice Cunningham (fr. Paterson, NJ/International) knotted the score at 13 for Kean with 2:51 left. The Profs pulled away with a 10-3 run to end the stanza with a seven-point lead (23-16). Raring produced five points in the stretch. A jumper and foul shot (7:44) by Raring in the second period increased the advantage to 14 (32-18) at 7:44. Oakley's jumper (3:51) pulled the Cougars within eight points (36-28). Crilley's three (2:07) put Rowan ahead by 14 points (43-29). Rulon closed the half with a three-pointer at the one second mark (48-34).
Rowan hosts Rutgers-Newark in the last regular season home game on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 5 p.m.
