Women's Basketball Wins 88-58 Over Rutgers-Newark

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team won 88-58 over Rutgers-Newark in the final regular season home game on Saturday night.
 
Prior to tip-off, the Profs honored their three senior players, guard/forward Alex Raring (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.), center April Szymczyk (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) and guard Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit).  Raring totaled 21 points, four rebounds and four steals.  Szymczyk contributed with 18 points and eight boards. 
 
Guard Dominique Peters (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) followed with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists.  Crilley chipped in with 13 points and eight boards.  The Profs had 10 players that scored points.
 
Rowan is 14-9 overall and 11-6 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  Rutgers-Newark has a 7-17 record with a 2-15 conference mark.  Guard Faith Ashby (jr. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) scored a game-high 24 points for the Scarlet Raiders.  She also grabbed seven rebounds.  Guard Hannah Ashby (so. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) registered nine points while guard Ania Harrell (so. Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) collected eight boards.
 
The Profs led 17-9 after the first quarter.  Harrell's layup (4:58) tied the score at eight.  Rowan then had a 9-1 run.  Szymczyk produced five points while Crilley and Raring each had two.  Rowan was ahead 22-11 at the eight-minute mark in the second period.  The Scarlet Raiders scored nine straight points to cut the deficit to two (22-20) with 5:01 remaining.  Faith Ashby had four points in the surge.  The Profs were ahead 28-26 with 3:33 left and they had a 7-2 spurt to lead 33-28 at the break.  Peters scored 11 first half points and Faith Ashby had 13.
 
In the third quarter, Faith Ashby hit a three-pointer (3:36) and Rutgers-Newark trailed by seven (45-38).  Rowan answered with a 12-2 run for a 17-point advantage (57-40) at the end.  Four different players contributed in the span.  The Profs started the final quarter with 12 unanswered points to lead 69-40 at 7:08.  Raring produced seven points while Crilley had five.  Rowan's biggest lead of the game was 32 points (76-44) after two foul shots by Raring (4:25).  She led all scorers in the second half with 13 points and Crilley registered 11.
 
Rowan ends the regular season at Ramapo College on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m.
