NAPLES, FL – The Rowan University women's basketball team fell to Drew University, 63-58 in overtime in the first game of the Naples Shootout on Saturday.
For Drew, guard Julia Ramos (so. Hazlet, NJ/St. John Vianney) had a game-high 28 points. She also grabbed eight boards and had six steals. Guard Hailey Stine (sr. Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) scored 14 points, followed by forward Erin Frederick (so. Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) who produced 13.
The Rangers have a 7-3 record while Rowan is 7-5 on the season. Guard
Olivia Rulon (sr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) led Rowan with 12 points. Guards
Grace Marshall (fr. Bellmawr, NJ/Haddon Twp.) and
Dominique Peters (jr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) contributed 11 points apiece. Center
Ayanna Johnson (fr. Ewing, NJ/The Pennington School) collected 11 rebounds and forward
Jenna Hoffner (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) had 10.
The score was even at 54 and the teams needed extra time to decide the winner. Rowan slipped early on in the extra period as Drew took a three point advantage (57-54) (3:22). The margin was cut to one when Johnson hit a layup to trail, 57-56 (2:53). The Rangers took control of the game late as they outscored the Brown and Gold, 6-2 for the victory.
The Profs trailed throughout most of the opening quarter. Down by six (14-8) with 2:20 left, Rowan sparked a five point run to cut the deficit to 14-13 with 16 seconds left. Hoffner scored two points and Peters had three. Ramos converted a free throw to pull ahead, 15-13 heading into the second.
The Brown and Gold dominated the second frame as it outscored Drew, 18-3. Rowan started the quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 20-15 advantage (4:46). Guard
Alexis Kriley (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) and Rulon hit back-to-back jumpers and guard
Nicole Byrne (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) made a three. After Stine scored a three, the Profs went on an 11-0 streak for a 31-18 advantage going into halftime.
Marshall hit a pair of threes to open the third quarter to build a 19 point lead (37-18) at 8:51. Rowan stumbled as Drew battled back to trail, 37-32 (2:47). The Profs picked up the pace and grew their lead back to double digits, 45-32 heading into the final quarter. Drew dominated the fourth stanza as it scored 22 points compared to Rowan's nine,which tied the game at 54 and force overtime.
The women's basketball team plays again tomorrow Sunday, Dec. 30, where it will face nationally ranked Tufts University at 11 a.m.
