Rowan Women's Basketball Tops New Jersey City, 79-60

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team topped New Jersey City University, 79-60 on Saturday.
 
The Profs move to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), while the Gothic Knights are 0-5 with a 0-3 conference mark. 
 
Forward Kailyn Sytsma (jr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) led the way with 16 points, followed by guard Grace Marshall (fr. Bellmawr, NJ/Haddon Twp.) with 14 points and five assists. Center Ayanna Johnson (fr. Ewing, NJ/The Pennington School) contributed 12 points and 14 rebounds, while guard Kennedy Brown (fr. Newark DE/The Tatnall School) chipped in 10 points and four assists. 
 
For the Gothic Knights, guard Marajiah Bacon (sr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) had a game-high 21 points. Guard Jesenia Montalvo had 11 points and forward Miesha Bacon (sr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) added nine. 
 
Rowan pulled ahead 12-5 in the opening quarter (6:37). The Profs kept rolling as they took a 13 point lead (25-12) with 56 seconds left. Johnson ignited the run with a layup and Marshall hit a three-pointer. Guard Dominique Peters (jr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) notched a pair of free throws, then Brown converted a free throw and guard Samantha Tello (jr. Elmwood Park, NJ/St. Mary's) drain a three (0:56). 
 
The Brown and Gold remained ahead after the second frame as it outscored the Gothic Knights, 19-17, to have a 44-30 advantage heading into halftime. 
 
Rowan dominated the third quarter after it scored 20 points compared to New Jersey City's 12. Sytsma scored the first six points for the Profs in the third to pull away, 50-30 (7:25). The Brown and Gold stayed in control as it held a 64-42 lead over the Gothic Knights at the end of the quarter, with seven seconds remaining.
 
The Profs travel to Stockton University on Wednesday, Dec. 5, with the contest slated to start at 6 p.m.
