GLASSBORO, NJ – The College of New Jersey men's basketball team held on for a 79-75 win at Rowan University on Wednesday night.
The Lions had five players in double figures. Guard Randall Walko (jr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville) scored a game-high 19 points and forward Jordan Glover (sr. Trenton, NJ/Lawrence) followed with 17. Guard Niall Carpenter (jr. Westampton, NJ/Westampton) and forward Ryan Jensen (jr. Brielle NJ/Manasquan) contributed with 12 points apiece. Carpenter grabbed eight rebounds. Guard P.J. Ringel (so. Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) chipped in with 11 points.
TCNJ improves to 2-3 overall while Rowan is 4-1 on the season. Both teams are 1-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
For the Profs, guard
Rob DePersia (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) and guard/forward
Ramon Wright (sr. Newark, NJ/Irvington) each totaled 14 points. Guard
DaRon Curry (sr. Deptford, NJ/Phelps School (PA)) added 12 points and forward
Austin Kearney (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Gloucester) had nine.
Rowan was down by nine points (55-46) after Kearney's jumper at 10:26 in the second stanza. DePersia cut the deficit to four (68-64) with two fouls shots (3:29). Guard
Nick DePersia (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) followed with a steal and a layup at 2:43 to trail by two (68-66). Ringel had a jump shot (1:52) then
Rob DePersia made a basket and a foul shot (1:26), which made the score 70-69. It was the closest the Profs came for the remainder of the game. Walko had two points at the line (0:49) to lead by five (74-69). Wright's layup (0:12) made the score 78-75. Ringel hit the second of two foul shots for the final score OF 79-75.
In the first half, Walko nailed a three-pointer that tied the score at six (17:13). TCNJ followed with threes by Carpenter (16:03) and Walko (15:12) to lead 12-6. Glover sank a three-pointer (15-9) that made the score 15-9 at 14:07. Curry produced back-to-back three-pointers that knotted the game at 15 (11:51). The Lions answered with a 12-4 run to lead 27-19 with 5:37 remaining. Five different players scored in the surge. Walko's three-pointer gave TCNJ a nine-point advantage (32-23) at 3:43. Rowan trailed 37-26 with 1:53 left in the half. The Lions closed the period with six straight points to lead 43-26 at the intermission.
