DOYLESTOWN, PA – The Rowan University women's basketball team dropped its season opener at Delaware Valley University, 68-64 on Tuesday.
The Profs are now 0-1 on their 2018-19 campaign while the Aggies move to 2-0.
Guard
Dominique Peters (jr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrenceville) led the way with 15 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Guard
Olivia Rulon (sr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) and forward
Kailyn Sytsma (jr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) contributed 11 apiece. Guard
Alexis Kriley (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) recorded 10 points, four assists and four rebounds.
For Delaware Valley, guard Danielle Skedzielewski (sr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) had a game-high 19 points. Guard Dom Moser (jr. Easton, PA/Easton) registered 18 points and eight boards, while guard Ashley Smink (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) and guard Sarah Wills (jr. Ambler, PA/Mount Saint Joseph Academy) notched 12.
The Brown and Gold trailed early in the opening quarter, 9-2. Rowan answered with Krilley converting a jump shot, followed by a three-point basket from guard
Kennedy Brown (fr. Newark, DE/The Tatnall School) to cut the deficit to 9-7 (5:08). The score remained close in the first, but Delaware Valley held a 22-19 advantage heading into the next frame.
After the Aggies tallied a three point basket to start the second, the Profs scored nine straight points to take their first lead of the contest, 28-25 (6:33). Peters added two points, followed by Sytsma hitting a pair of baskets and Rulon making a jump shot. Both teams went back and forth, but Delaware Valley pulled ahead leading into halftime, 39-36.
The Profs slipped in the third quarter as the Aggies built a 12 point lead (58-46). Rowan responded in the fourth with a 14-3 run to trail by one (61-60). Peters hit one from beyond the arc, followed by a quick steal and score from Rulon and back-to-back baskets by Peters. The Brown and Gold fell behind 66-64 with eight seconds left and fouled the other team in attempt to regain possession. Smink from Delaware Valley sunk both free throws to ice the game and win, 68-64.
Rowan travels to Plattsburgh, NY for the Cardinal Classic on Friday, Nov. 16, where it will take on The Sage Colleges at 8 p.m.
