NJCU Men's Basketball Comes Back For 79-76 Win At Rowan

Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The New Jersey City University men's basketball team came back for a 79-76 win at Rowan University on Saturday.  The Gothic Knights outscored the Profs in the second half, 52-31.
 
Guard Shaquan Worthy (jr. Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) nailed a three-pointer with 1:20 left, which tied the game at 75.  Forward TJ Booth (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) made the second of two foul shots (0:40) to put Rowan up 76-75.  Forward Sam Toney (so. Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown) hit a jumper (0:20) and center Chika Wosu (fr. Jersey City/University Academy Charter) had two points at the line (0:05) to seal the victory.
 
Toney ended the game with 36 points and six rebounds.  He was 12 for 17 from the field with three threes and nine for 10 at the line.  Wosu contributed with 12 points and eight boards.  Guard Lavrone Green (jr. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) chipped in with eight points while Worthy totaled seven points and eight rebounds. 
 
NJCU is 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  The Gothic Knights are ranked 20th in the latest d3hoops.com Top-25 Poll.  Rowan has an 8-6 record with a 4-3 conference mark.
 
Forward Ramon Wright (jr. East Orange, NJ/Irvington), guard Jeff Haddock (so. Burlington, NJ/Willingboro) and Booth all scored 17 points for Rowan.  Wright also grabbed nine boards.  Guard Rob DePersia (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) collected nine points, six rebounds and five assists.  Guard Nick DePersia (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) registered eight points and nine rebounds. 
 
In the second stanza, the Profs had an 18-point advantage (47-29) at 19:09 after two free throws by Wright.  NJCU rallied with a 16-2 run to pull within four points (49-45) with 15:19 remaining.  Toney scored five points while Green and Wosu each had four and guard Robert Gordon (jr. Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) had three. 
 
Toney's jumper (12:24) cut the deficit to two (51-49).  Rowan's last double-digit lead was 70-58 at 5:39.  Toney drilled three straight three-pointers to pull within three (70-67) with 4:51 on the clock.  With 2:05 remaining, he sank three straight foul shots and the Gothic Knights were down by three (2:05) before Worthy's tying three-pointer.

Rowan started the game with seven straight points in 1:20.  Wright hit a three-pointer while guard DaRon Curry (jr. Deptford, NJ/Phelps School (PA)) and Booth each had a basket.  NJCU trailed by one-point (7-6) after Toney's two free throws at 16:33.  The Profs followed with a 13-4 run to lead by 10 points (20-10) with 10:16 remaining.  Rob DePersia scored six points while Booth added four and Wright had three. 
 
Toney's layup at 8:34 made the score 22-17.  An 11-2 spurt put Rowan ahead 33-19 at the 5:22 mark.  Haddock produced six of the 11 points in the surge.  Guard Ruben Acosta (sr. Waterbury, CT/Bogota) made back-to-back baskets and the Gothic Knights trailed 39-25 at 2:34.  Rob DePersia (1:28) and Nick DePersia (0:20) each drilled a three to lead by 20 (45-25).  Worthy had a layup (0:01) to end the period with Rowan ahead 45-27.       
 
Rowan is home again on Wednesday, Jan. 10 against Ramapo College at 6 p.m.
