CAMDEN, NJ – Rowan University guard
Olivia Rulon broke a 28-year-old program record with eight three-pointers but the Profs suffered an 82-77 loss at Rutgers-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday.
Rulon (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) finished with a career-high 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 8-of-12 from beyond the arc. The eight threes surpassed the University mark of seven held by Michelle Minerva. Minerva recorded the feat on Dec. 8, 1990 in an 81-77 win at Rutgers-Newark.
Guards
Dominique Peters (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) and
Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) totaled 14 and 12 points respectively. Crilley added nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. She made her 100
th career three-pointer, becoming just the fourth player in program history to reach the figure. Center
April Szymczyk (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) and forward
Kailyn Sytsma (so. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) contributed with eight and seven points respectively. Sytsma also had five boards.
Rowan has an 11-7 record and it is 8-4 in the conference. The Scarlet Raptors are 10-8 overall with a 7-5 NJAC mark. Guard Gabby Greene (jr. Howell, NJ/Howell) led Rutgers-Camden with 22 points. Forward/center Michelle Obasi (sr. Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) and guard/forward Cara Racobaldo (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) tallied 17 points apiece. Racobaldo also grabbed nine rebounds and dished seven assists while Obasi had six boards. Guard Lajerah Wright (so. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) chipped in with 12 points.
The score was tied at two in the opening quarter before the Scarlet Raptors scored seven straight for a 9-2 lead (8:14). Wright had three points and Obasi and Racobaldo each recorded two. Rulon hit a triple (2:26) to get the Profs within four (17-13). Rutgers-Camden was ahead 19-13 after the first. Rowan began the second with an 8-2 run to tie the score at 21 (4:48). Guard
Juliette Tobin (fr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford Twp.) and Sytsma each drilled a three and Crilley added a layup.
The Scarlet Raptors were up 24-23 before increasing the margin to nine (32-23) with an 8-0 surge that ended at 1:17. Guard/forward Ariel Robinson (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) posted four points while forward Kirsten Flournoy (so. Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) and Racobaldo had two apiece. Peters made a layup (0:14) and three-pointer (0:01) to get the Profs within four (32-28) at the break. Greene totaled 11 points in the half and Peters had 10.
In the third, Obasi's free throw (8:25) put Rutgers-Camden ahead 36-34. Rowan followed with a 15-2 run to take its first lead of the contest, 49-38, with 5:17 on the clock. Five different players scored in the rally, led by Rulon's six points on a pair of threes. Obasi sank two foul shots (3:05) to close the gap to four (49-45). Rulon drilled three consecutive shots from downtown to up the advantage to 13 (58-45) left. Racobaldo made a layup (0:31) and the score was 58-49 entering the fourth.
Crilley's milestone three-pointer put the Profs in front by 10 (63-53) with 8:36 left. The score was 67-59 after a layup by Szymczyk (5:56). The Scarlet Raptors then went on a 9-1 run to tie the score for the fourth time (68-68) at the 4:02 mark. Wright led the spurt with six points. Rulon scored a three (3:42) and a layup (2:27). Racobaldo responded with a triple (2:18) and Greene converted a layup (1:54) to even the score for the final time at 73. Greene gave Rutgers-Camden a 76-73 lead with a three-pointer (1:34). Szymczyk's lay-in (0:46) made it a one-point game (76-75) before another three by Greene (0:25) and a layup by Obasi (0:14) upped the advantage to six (81-75).
