Montclair State Women's Basketball Wins 72-66 At Rowan

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Montclair State University women's basketball won 72-66 at conference opponent Rowan University on Saturday afternoon.
 
Guard/forward Katie Sire (sr. Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Forward Taylor Harmon (sr. Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) contributed with 15 points. Guard Kate Tobie (sr. Elizabeth, NJ/Roselle Catholic) and forward Alex McKinnon (so. Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) were in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.  They each grabbed seven boards.  Tobie also compiled 13 assists. 
 
The Red Hawks are 18-1 overall and in first place (13-0) of the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  This week, Montclair State is ranked 17th in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Rankings and 22nd in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. The Profs are 11-8 overall and 8-5 in the conference.
 
Guard Dominique Peters (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) scored 18 points for Rowan.  Guard Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) totaled 11 points and five rebounds.  Forward Kailyn Sytsma (so. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan), center April Szymczyk (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) and guard Samantha Tello (so. Elmwood Park, NJ/St. Mary's) all produced 10 points.
 
The first quarter ended with the Profs ahead 18-16.  Peters gave Rowan the lead with a layup at the 12 second mark.  The score was tied four times in the second period.  Szymczyk sank two foul shots (0:12) and knotted the score at 35.  Forward Domonique Wirsing (jr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) had two points at the line (0:01), which put Montclair State up 37-35 at the break.  Harmon and Peters each scored 11 first half points. 
 
After the third quarter, the Red Hawks led by six points (55-49).  Sire's three-pointer (6:24) made the score 46-39.  McKinnon drilled a three (4:45) and Montclair State had an eight-point advantage (49-41).  The Profs answered with eight straight points and tied the score at 49 with 2:02 on the clock.  Sytsma had four foul shots while Crilley and Szymczyk each registered a basket.  Sire followed with two free throws at 1:34 and 0:28.  Tobin had the final basket (0:06) to lead 55-49.
 
McKinnon's three at 5:36 in the final quarter gave Montclair State a 10-point lead (64-54).  Crilly cut the deficit to five (66-61) with two free throws at 3:43. Harmon hit a three (3:17) and the score was 69-61.  Sytsma hit the first of two foul shots (1:17) and the Profs trailed 69-64.  Sire had two free throws (0:25) and Crilley hit a jumper (0:22).  Sire had the final point at the line (0:12). She led all scorers in the second half with 12 points.

Next week, Rowan travels to The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, Jan. 31 for a 6 p.m. game.
