Women's Basketball Pulls Away From William Paterson in Second Half For 70-48 Victory

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team pulled away from William Paterson University in the second half for a 70-48 win on Saturday afternoon. 
 
The Profs outscored the Pioneers, 36-20 in the last two quarters.  Rowan has an 11-6 record with an 8-3 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  William Paterson is 10-8 overall and 7-4 in the conference.
 
The Profs had points from 11 of the 13 players that were in the game.  Center April Szymczyk (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.  It was her fourth on the season.  Guard Dominque Peters (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) scored 14 points and forward Paige Caldwell (fr. Bridgeton, NJ/Woodstown) followed with nine.  Forward Kailyn Sytsma (so. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) grabbed a game-high 11 boards, which was a career mark.
 
For the Pioneers, guards CeCe Green (jr. Boonton, NJ/Boonton) and Ashley Castillo (jr. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) each totaled 11 points.  Green produced seven rebounds while Castillo had six.  Guard Julie Rovito (jr. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) registered 10 points and six boards. 
 
The score was tied five times and there were five lead changes in the first quarter.  Guard Brianna Brooks (fr. Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) made a layup for William Paterson and the score was knotted at 14 (1:16).  Caldwell hit a three (0:58) and Peters had a basket (0:28) to lead by five (19-14). Castillo cut the deficit to two (19-17) with a three at the 14 second mark to end the period.
 
In the second stanza, the score was tied four more times before the Profs took the lead for good.  Green's jumper tied the game at 25 with 4:04 remaining.  Peters scored a layup and free throw (2:47) while Caldwell nailed a three (2:26) to lead 31-25.  Castillo followed with a three (1:45) and Szymczyk had a layup and foul shot (0:06).  Rowan was ahead 34-28 at the half.  Szymczyk led the way with 13 points and Peters collected 11.
 
The Profs had a 10-point lead (42-32) after a three-pointer by Samantha Tello (so. Elmwood Park, NJ/St. Mary's) in the third (5:48).  Castillo sank two free throws (0:31) and the Pioneers trailed 45-36.  Rowan ended the quarter with two foul shots (0:25) by guard Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) and a layup from forward Jenna Hoffner (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee).
 
The final period started with a 10-4 run by the Profs for a 19-point advantage (59-40) with 6:10 left.  Guard Olivia Rulon (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) and Szymczyk each scored four points and guard Juliette Tobin (fr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford Twp.) had two.  Peters' three-pointer (5:22) put Rowan ahead by 21 (62-41).  Rowan's biggest lead of the game was 24 points after guard Morgan Papp's layup (fr. Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Reg.) with 1:25 on the clock.
 
Rowan plays at conference opponent Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m.
