GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team defeated New Jersey City University, 89-45 on Saturday night.
The Profs had five players in double figures. Guard
Olivia Rulon (so. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) led the way with a career-high 20 points. Guard
Alexis Kriley (fr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) contributed with 13 points and guard/forward
Alex Raring (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) followed with 12. Center
April Szymczyk (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) produced a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Guard
Dominique Peters (fr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) chipped in with 10 points and nine boards. Guard
Valerie Garofalo (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) dished 10 assists and had eight points.
Rowan is 14-8 overall and 8-7 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. NJCU drops to 4-18 on the season and 0-15 in the conference.
For the Gothic Knights, guard/forward Kiana Briggs (sr. Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Guard/forward Jazz Randall (sr. Parsippany, NJ/West Orange) totaled 11 points and eight boards. Guard Iyannah Moore (fr. Newark, NJ/University) registered 10 points. Forward/center Atonie Johnson (fr. Irvington, NJ/Irvington) pulled down nine rebounds and she added eight points.
The Profs started the game with 16 straight points in 5:50. Raring collected six points in the run. Szymczyk's baskets at 1:20 and 0:44 put Rowan up 22-5 going into the second quarter. Kriley made the score 30-11 (6:57) with back-to-back layups. Rulon hit a jumper (4:56) and a three (3:46) for a 23-point advantage (38-15). Peters nailed a three-pointer and the Profs were ahead by 29 (48-19) with 1:18 on the clock. Rowan was ahead 50-23 at the break.
In the third period, Kriley scored two consecutive baskets and the score was 67-33 at 3:03. Johnson sank a foul shot (2:46) and had a jumper (1:45) to trail 67-36. Rowan led by 36 (72-36) at the end of the quarter. The Profs' biggest lead of the game was 48 points when guard
Hannah Buckley (jr. Green Township, NJ/Newton) drilled a three at the 5:53 mark in the last stanza.
Next week, Rowan travels to Kean University on Wednesday, Feb. 8 for a 6 p.m. game.
