UNION, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team had a 93-86 victory at Kean University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday evening.
The Profs have a 15-8 record and they are in fourth place in the conference (9-7) with two games remaining in the regular season. The Cougars are 15-8 overall and are second in the NJAC standings with a 12-4 mark. The top six teams qualify for the NJAC Championship Tournament.
Five players scored in double figures for Rowan. Guard
Summer Crilley (jr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) totaled 21 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Guard
Olivia Rulon (so. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) and guard/forward
Alex Raring (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) registered 18 and 15 points respectively. Guards
Dominique Peters (fr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) and
Alexis Kriley (fr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) each produced 11 points. Kriley also recorded season-highs in rebounds (9) and assists (4) and Peters grabbed five boards. Center
April Szymczyk (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) brought down 10 rebounds, tying her season mark.
Kean guard Marajiah Bacon (so. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) scored a game-high 26 points and added six assists, five steals and four rebounds. Guard Jaquetta Owens (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) tallied 20 points, five assists and four steals. Center/forward De'Mean Bond (fr. Paterson, NJ/John F. Kennedy) had a double-double with 16 points and 21 rebounds. She also blocked four shots. Guard Danielle Oakley (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) contributed with 12 points and center Ruby Asabor (so. Elmont, NY/Long Island Lutheran) chipped in with 10 boards.
The score was tied at 13 with 4:12 to go in the opening period. The Cougars had 16 of the next 23 points for a nine-point advantage (29-20) with 6:43 to play in the second quarter. Five different players scored in the stretch, led by Oakley's six points. The Profs followed with a 13-2 run to go ahead by two (33-31) at the 4:03 mark. Crilley poured in six points, Peters had five and Raring added a basket. The seventh and final deadlock of the game (33-33) occurred with 3:43 on the clock. Rowan put up 10 of the last 14 points to lead 43-37 at the intermission.
In the third, Rulon's three (6:59) gave the Profs an eight-point cushion (53-45). Kean cut the deficit to two (56-54) with a 9-3 surge. Bacon scored five of the nine points. Rowan followed with a 13-5 rally for the only double-digit lead of the night (69-59) with 1:32 left. Peters led the way with six points.
The Cougars netted seven straight to get within three (69-66) at 9:22 of the final stanza. The Profs were up by eight four different times in the quarter, with the last coming at 2:23 (88-80). Kean recorded six of the next seven points to make the score 89-86 (0:58). The Cougars missed two chances at a tying three-pointer and Rowan converted foul shots to seal the win.
