PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rowan University men's swimming and diving team won the Metropolitan Championships for the second straight year on Sunday night. The three-day meet was held at Rutgers University.
The Profs captured the title with 1413.5 points among 15 teams. The 400 freestyle relay came in second with a time of 3:01.17, which was a school record and NCAA B qualifier (3:04.10). The previous Rowan mark was 3:01.61 (March 2016). The relay consisted of
Eric Feuerstein (jr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit),
Nate Wojtowicz (so. Centreville, MD/Queen Anne's County),
Paul Long (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and
Jesse Novak (sr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan).
Novak swam a winning time of 43.84 in the 100 freestyle, which was a NCAA B cut (45.53). He received the Dick Krempecki Outstanding Senior Award. Feuerstein finished fourth (45.54) and Wojtowicz came in eighth (47.10).
Mike Simunek (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) took first place (2:03.18) in the 200 breaststroke. His time of 2:02.51 in the prelims was better than his school record (2:04.17, Feb. 2015) and it was a NCAA B time (2:04.80). Marks won the 200 butterfly in 1:49.88, which was a NCAA B qualifier (1:52.89).
Sean Piacente (so. New City, NJ/Clarkstown S.) claimed first place in the three-meter diving with 623.20 points. Piacente was named the Male Diver of the Meet and
Jesse Lyman was the Male Diving Coach of the Year.
John Morris (sr. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) took second (548.90) and
Chad Shire (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was sixth (346.80).
John Tepper (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Atlantic County Institute of Tech.) had a school record and NCAA B time of 15:53.45 in the 1650 freestyle for third place. Tepper broke the University mark of 16:04.42 that he had from last season. The NCAA B cut is 16:16.65.
Long had a fourth place (2:05.85) in the 200 breaststroke and
Matt Grubb (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) was 10th (2:09.48).
John Shellem (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) came in eighth (1:55.64) in the 200 butterfly.
In the 200 backstroke,
Colin Fisher (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) finished fifth (1:53.74) and
Adam Sicinski (so. Allentown, PA/Parkland) followed sixth (1:54.22).
Dan Lawton (so. Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) and
Luke Wister (sr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) were 10th (1:53.01) and 14th (1:56.92) respectively.
