Women's Basketball Falls At York (PA), 96-67 In Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

YORK, PA – The Rowan University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, 96-67 at York College (PA) on the final day of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
 
The Profs are 2-1 on the season while the Spartans have a 3-0 record. York claimed the tournament title, going 2-0 on the weekend.
 
Spartans' guard Katie Wagner (sr. Glen Rock, PA/Susquehannock) led all scorers with 19 points. She added seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Guard Sam Mocniak (sr. Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's Annapolis) totaled 16 points and six boards. Forward Katie McGowan (jr. York, PA/Dallastown) produced 14 points and nine rebounds while guard Kayla Ferris (fr. Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) contributed with 13 points, seven boards and four steals. Forward Molly Day (fr. York, PA/York Suburban) tallied 12 points and guard Debria Hendricks (jr. Baltimore, MD/Dallastown (PA)) dished 14 assists. York shot 48% from the field, including 60% in the second half.
 
For Rowan, center April Szymczyk (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Guard/forward Alex Raring (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and guard Dominique Peters (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) registered 12 and 10 points respectively. Guard Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) chipped in with nine points and seven boards. She was named to the All-Tournament Team. Guard Juliette Tobin (fr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford Twp.) and forward Kailyn Sytsma (so. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) each had eight points with Sytsma adding six rebounds.
 
The Spartans posted the first nine points of the contest in the opening 3:09. Four different players scored in the stretch. Day's three-pointer made the score 18-8 with 4:28 left. The Profs registered eight straight points to cut the deficit to two (18-16) at the 2:59 mark. Crilley had five points and Sytsma added a three. Day made a layup to make the score 26-18 at the end of one.
 
York had a 32-26 advantage after a layup by Wagner with 6:29 to go before the break. Peters caught fire with six consecutive points to tie the score (5:05). She had a three-pointer, layup and foul shot. Ferris ended the period with a lay-in (0:38) and the Spartans were up 43-39 at halftime. Wagner totaled 13 points in the half.
 
In the third stanza, York increased its lead to 51-39 (7:07) with an 8-0 run. Mocniak and McGowan produced four points apiece. Raring's layup (4:54) got Rowan within five (52-47). With the score 64-54, the Spartans had a 6-0 rally to go up by 16 (70-54) with 34 seconds remaining in the quarter and finished the frame with a 70-56 cushion.
 
Szymczyk made a layup at 7:54 in the final period to close the gap to 14 (74-60). York broke the game open with a 14-0 surge for an 88-60 advantage (3:30). McGowan scored seven points, Wagner had four and Mocniak added a three. The Spartans' largest lead was the final score.
 
The Profs begin conference play versus Stockton University on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m.
