GLASSBORO, NJ – The Stockton University women's basketball team held on for a 70-64 win at Rowan University on Tuesday night.
The Ospreys are undefeated with a 4-0 record while the Profs are 2-2 on the season. It was the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Rowan outscored Stockton 24-7 in the third quarter and tied the score at 48. In the last quarter, the Profs led 56-50 after eight straight points. Guard Juliette Tobin (fr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford Twp.) contributed with five points and center April Szymczyk (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) had three. Forward Sasha Williams (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) sank two foul shots to pull the Ospreys within one (59-58) and 5:10 was on the clock.
Guard Dominique Peters' (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) free throw gave Rowan a three-point advantage (64-61) at 2:01. Stockton pulled away with a 9-0 run for the final score. Forward Najha Treadwell (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) totaled five points while guard Sammi Dabbundo (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Bishop Eustace) and Williams each had two.
Treadwell ended the contest with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Williams registered a double-double with 13 points and 16 boards. She also posted nine blocks and dished five assists. Dabbundo totaled 13 points while guard Lea Mendolla (sr. Nutley, NJ/Mount St. Dominic) followed with 12 points and seven rebounds. Guard Hailee Porricelli (fr. Howell, NJ/Freehold Twp.) chipped in with 10 points.
Szymczyk recorded career marks with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Peters and guard/forward Alex Raring (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Forward Kailyn Sytsma (so. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) grabbed eight boards.
Rowan was down 41-24 going into the third stanza. The Ospreys were ahead 48-33 at 5:19 then the Profs stormed back with 15 straight points to knot the score (48-48) when time ran out in the quarter. Szymczyk led the way with six points and forward Paige Caldwell (fr. Bridgeton, NJ/Woodstown) followed with four. Guard
Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) and Tobin tallied three and two points respectively.
In the first quarter, Stockton was ahead 17-10 with 3:17 left. The Ospreys produced 13 unanswered points to lead by 20 (30-10) at the end. Mendolla contributed with six points in the surge. The Profs started the second stanza with a 5-2 spurt and trailed 32-15 at 8:41.
Raring had three points at the line and Crilley made two free throws. Mendolla's layup (6:34) made the score 37-16.
With 4:59 left, Treadwell hit a jumper for a 22-point advantage (39-17). Rowan scored seven straight points and trailed 39-24 at 1:26. Caldwell produced four of the seven points. Forward April Peterson's (jr. Lafayette, NJ/High Point) layup (1:09) put Stockton up 41-24 at the intermission.
Next week, Rowan hosts Albright College on Monday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m.
