New Jersey City Men's Basketball Comes Back For 89-72 Win Over Rowan

Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ  – The New Jersey City University men's basketball team came back in the second half for an 89-72 win over Rowan University on Monday night.  The game was rescheduled from Jan. 7 because of the weather. 
 
Guard Jalen Harris (sr. Brandywine, MD/Gwynn Park) led the way with a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds.  Forward Sam Toney (fr. Somerdale, NJ/Williamstown) recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 boards.  Guard Joseph Kelley (so. Newark, NJ/University) chipped in with 12 points.  Forward Chinwe Wosu (gr. Jersey City, NJ/University Academy Charter) collected eight rebounds and had six points.
 
The Gothic Knights are 12-2 overall and 6-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).  They are ranked 24th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.  The Profs are 9-5 overall with a 4-3 conference mark.
 
For Rowan, guard Rob DePersia (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) totaled 13 points, five rebounds, seven assists and three steals.  Guard Nick DePersia (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) scored 13 points and grabbed seven boards.  Forwards Gary Carthan (sr. Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Reg.) and Jordan Sintras (fr. Sydney, Australia/St. Ignatius' College, Riverview) added 10 and nine points respectively.
 
New Jersey City tied the score four times in the final stanza before taking the lead for good.  The last tie was at 60 (9:49) after Toney made two free throws.  Nick DePersia followed with two points at the line to go ahead 62-60 at 9:41.  The Gothic Knights pulled away 71-62 at the seven- minute mark after 11 consecutive points.  Guard Andrew Tomlin (sr. Newark, NJ/Central) produced nine points in the run.  Guard DaRon Curry (so. Deptford, NJ/Phelps School (PA)) cut the deficit to five (71-66) with a three-pointer at 6:45.  Harris' three gave NJCU an 11-point advantage (77-66) with 4:42 left.  Rob DePersia had a layup (3:42) and the Profs trailed 82-72.  The Gothic Knights ended the game with seven straight points for the victory. 
 
There were seven ties in the first half.  The score was knotted at eight (16:17) then the Gothic Knights had five straight points for a 13-8 advantage with 15:22 remaining.  Guard Josh Borelli (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) hit a three (14:55) and Rob DePersia tied the score with a layup (14:40).  NJCU followed with an 8-0 spurt to lead 21-13 at 12:35.  Rowan went ahead 25-21 after 12 unanswered points.  Forward TJ Booth (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) scored two baskets, Sintras contributed with two three-pointers and Rob DePersia had a layup.  
 
The Profs were ahead 30-25 and the Gothic Knights tied the score at 32 with 4:01 on the clock.  The last tie (34-34) came after Kelley sank two foul shots at the 3:01 mark.  Nick DePersia had two free throws at 2:39 and one at 1:54 for a three-point advantage (37-34).  Kelley scored a basket (1:46) while forward Brian Thatcher (fr. North Port, FL/Charlotte) hit a three (0:12) to put Rowan up 40-36 at the break.
 
Rowan is on the road again at NJAC opponent Ramapo College on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
