GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team defeated Rutgers-Newark, 94-52 on Saturday afternoon.
Guard/forward
Alex Raring (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and guards
Olivia Rulon (so. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) and
Summer Crilley (jr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) all contributed with 13 points. Raring grabbed seven rebounds and Crilley followed with six. Guards
Anyssa Sanchez (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Sterling) and
Alexis Kriley (fr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) scored 12 and 11 points respectively.
Center
April Szymczyk (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) chipped in with eight points and seven boards. Guard
Valerie Garofalo (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) collected seven points, three assists and three steals. Forward
Tamera Webster (so. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) pulled down eight rebounds and had seven points.
The Profs have a 12-4 record and they are 6-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Scarlet Raiders drop to 5-11 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
Guard Maria Simmons (sr. Irvington, NJ/Irvington) recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards for Rutgers-Newark. She also tallied five assists and five steals. Guard Faith Ashby (so. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) registered 18 points.
The score was tied at three in the first quarter then Rowan built a 12-point advantage (17-5) with a 14-2 run that ended with a Kriley layup at 5:12. Forward
Kailyn Sytsma's (fr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) basket at the 45 second mark made the score 21-8. The Profs led by 11 (21-10) going into the second stanza.
Sanchez sank a foul shot at 9:46 and Rowan was ahead 22-10. Rutgers-Newark pulled within six points (22-16) after three straight baskets with 8:14 on the clock. Guards Hannah Ashby (fr. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck), Louise Ann Borja (fr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and Faith Ashby each had two points. The Profs increased the lead to 11 (27-16) with a three-pointer by Rulon (8:01) and a layup from Raring (7:11). Crilley hit a jump shot with two seconds left and Rowan was ahead 42-25 at the half.
In the third period, Rowan led by 28 (56-28) at 5:08 after nine straight points. Rulon contributed with five points while Szymczyk had four. Four straight free throws put Rowan up by 29 (60-31) with 3:31 remaining. Garofalo and Rulon each produced two points at the line. Kriley had the final jumper (0:17) of the quarter for a 32-point advantage (66-34). The Profs had their largest lead of 42 points at the end of the game.
Next week, Rowan hosts conference opponent Stockton University on Wednesday, January 18 at 6 p.m.
