Montclair State Football Wins 21-14 Over Rowan

Box Score MONTCLAIR, NJ –   Running back John DiStefano scored the winning touchdown for Montclair State University in a 21-14 victory over Rowan University at Sprague Field on Saturday.  There were 3,115 fans that attended the Color Rush game.  
 
With 49 seconds left, DiStefano (sr. Lincroft, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) crossed the goal line with a nine yard run.  The drive was five yards and covered 57 yards.  He also carried the ball for the two-point conversion.  Rowan's final series ended with a five-yard interception return by free safety Dylan Elliott (jr. Westfield, NJ/Westfield).
 
Both teams are 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  DiStefano ended the game with 124 yards rushing with 35 attempts and two touchdowns.  Quarterback Ryan Adzima (fr. Wallington, NJ/DePaul Catholic) threw for 202 yards (10 completions, 21 attempts) and one TD.  Wide receivers Julanee Prince (jr. Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) and Joe Schultz (jr. Howell, NJ/Howell) each had three catches for 96 and 66 yards respectively.  Prince scored with a 73-yard reception.
 
Linebacker Nick Catalano (jr. Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) and defensive end Joe Falato (sr. Lodi, NJ/Lodi) led the Red Hawk defense with 10 tackles apiece.  Cornerback Shaon Stephenson (jr. Paterson, NJ/John F. Kennedy) contributed with nine tackles while defensive end Jake Weber (so. Matawan, NJ/Matawan) and defensive tackle Vincent Cordasco (jr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) each added eight.  Linebacker Frank Greco (sr. Verona, NJ/Verona) recovered two fumbles and linebacker Chris Cimilluca (so. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) had one fumble recovery.  Linebacker Mauro Altamura (so. Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) chipped in with an interception.
 
For Rowan, quarterback Dante Pinckney (jr. Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) made 18 of 27 attempts for 203 yards and one touchdown.  Wide receiver Jamel Smith (jr. Wrightstown, NJ/New Egypt) totaled 83 yards with six catches.  Wide receiver Zac Frantz (sr. Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) had four receptions for 54 yards and a four-yard TD.  Running back Gawain Bragg (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) rushed for 91 yards on 24 carries.
 
Linebacker Jeff Rodriguez (sr. Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) produced the Profs' second touchdown on a blocked punt return.  Defensive end Kevin Stokes (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) recorded the block.  Defensive end Chris Henchy (jr. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Absegami) collected eight tackles and one sack.  Defensive tackles Anthony Rizzolo (sr. Green Brook, N/Watchung Hills Reg.) and Will Flake (sr. Tabernacle, NJ/Seneca) and linebacker Ryan Brenner (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) all tallied seven tackles.  Cornerback Kori Haggie (sr. Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech.) registered two picks and strong safety Shaquille Lee (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) recovered a fumble.

Montclair State got on the scoreboard first with 1:11 left in the first quarter.  DiStefano had a two-yard touchdown on the first play of the drive, which started after Greco recovered a Prof fumble.  Pinckney hit Frantz with a four-yard touchdown pass at 9:49 in the second stanza.  The drive took 14 plays and spanned 78 yards.   
 
In the fourth quarter, Rodriguez gave the Profs a 14-7 lead after the block punt return.  Stokes blocked the punt on the Montclair State 13-yard line.  On the Red Hawks' next drive, Prince scored a 73-yard touchdown.  He caught the ball that went through two Rowan defenders that collided.  Right tackle Darryl Guilford (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Buena Reg.) blocked the extra point attempt and the Red Hawks trailed 14-13. 
 
Montclair State's winning touchdown drive started with 1:18 left on the clock.  Adzima had two pass completions for 45 yards and he ran for 11 yards on one attempt.  The Red Hawks had an incomplete pass then a penalty of five yards that put the ball on the nine-yard line before DiStefano had the winning carry.
 
Next week, Rowan has a home game against Christopher Newport University on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m.
