Men's Basketball Holds Off Rutgers-Camden, 78-75

Box Score CAMDEN, NJ  – The Rowan University men's basketball team won 78-75 at conference opponent Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday night.
 
Guard Jeff Haddock (fr. Burlington, NJ/Willingboro) led the way with 20 points and forward Shawn Wilson (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) followed with 18.  Forward Gary Carthan (sr. Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Reg.) added 10 points.  Forward TJ Booth (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) chipped in with nine points and six rebounds.
 
The Profs are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  The Scarlet Raptors have a 0-3 record with a 0-2 conference mark.
 
For Rutgers-Camden, guard Keith Washington (fr. Clementon, NJ/Monsignor Bonner) totaled 20 points and seven boards.  Guard Elijah Robles (so. Clifton, NJ/Clifton) scored 18 points while forward Isaac Destin (so. Woodlynne, NJ/Collingswood) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
 
There were four lead changes and the score was tied four times in the second half.  Destin made a layup (12:18) and two foul shots (11:58) to give the Scarlet Raptors the lead 57-55.  Haddock's basket knotted the score at 60 (11:20).  Carthan put Rowan ahead by one (62-61) with a layup at 10:07.  Rutgers-Camden had baskets by Washington (9:09) and guard Julian Martin (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) (8:05) to lead 65-62.   
 
Carthan's layup tied the score (68-68) and his free throw put Rowan up for good at 6:53.  Haddock nailed a three (6:17), which made the score 72-68.  Booth had two points at the line (3:47) and Wilson scored with a layup (2:10) for a six-point advantage (76-70).  Destin grabbed a rebound and hit a jump shot (1:38) and the Scarlet Raptors were down by four (76-72).  Booth's jumper (1:17) increased the lead to six (78-72).  Martin drilled a three at the 53-second mark and Rutgers-Camden missed a three-point attempt in the final seconds. 
 
Rowan got off to a slow start in the first half and trailed by four points (6-2) at 17:40 after two foul shots by Washington.  The Profs followed with an 11-2 spurt to lead 13-8 (14:26).  Wilson contributed with nine of the 11 points.  Robles' jumper (13:21) cut the deficit to four (16-12).  Rowan then scored seven straight for an 11-point advantage (23-12) with 12:58 remaining.
 
The Scarlet Raptors pulled within one (23-22) after a 10-0 run that ended with a Washington three-pointer.  The Profs nailed two threes and went back up by seven points (29-22) at 7:16.  Haddock sank three free throws to lead 40-29 with 4:13 on the clock.  Guard Rob DePersia (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) had a layup (1:12) and the score was 44-33.  Rutgers-Camden ended the period with three straight baskets and was down by five (44-39) at the break.  Guard Marcus Taylor (jr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) had two layups and Destin added one. 
 
Next, Rowan plays William Paterson University in the home opener on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 3 p.m.
