Women's Basketball Wins Home Opener Versus Lehman, 107-89

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team registered its largest offensive output in 15 years in a 107-89 victory over Lehman College on Saturday afternoon.
 
It was the first home game of the year for the Profs and they have a 4-1 record. The Lightning have a 1-2 mark. It was the most points scored in a game by Rowan since a 110-78 triumph against New Jersey City University on Jan. 13, 2001.
 
Six Profs reached double figures in scoring, led by center April Szymczyk (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) with 15. Guards Anyssa Sanchez (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Sterling) and Samantha Tello (fr. Elmwood Park, NJ/St. Mary's) recorded 14 and 12 points respectively. Sanchez also corralled five rebounds. Guard Summer Crilley (jr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) and guard/forward Alex Raring (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) tallied 11 points and five rebounds apiece and guard Olivia Rulon (so. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) added 10 points. Guard Valerie Garofalo (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) and Crilley dished nine and six assists respectively.
 
Guard Amely Del Rosario (sr. Bronx, NY/John F. Kennedy) paced Lehman with 40 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Center Shakia Artist (jr. Bronx, NY/Urban Assembly for Careers in Sport) produced 16 points, eight boards and six blocks. Guard Lynda Fields (jr. Bronx, NY/Truman) and guard/forward Krystal Pearson (jr. Bronx, NY/Truman) contributed with 13 and 12 points respectively.
 
Artist made the first basket of the game then the Profs went on a 20-6 run to lead 20-8 with 4:55 to go in the opening quarter. Six different players scored in the stretch, with Crilley and Garofalo netting five points apiece. Sanchez made a layup (9:35) to begin the second period for a 15-point Rowan advantage (34-19). The Lightning cut the deficit to nine (43-34) with a jumper by guard/forward Selima Sangare (so. New York, NY/Talent Unlimited) at the 5:13 mark. The Profs followed with eight of the next nine for a 16-point cushion (51-35). Lehman closed out the first half with a 12-3 surge to trail 54-47 at the break. Del Rosario registered seven of the points in the run.
 
With Rowan ahead 59-47, the Lightning had nine straight points to close the gap to three (59-56) with 6:27 on the clock in the third. The Profs countered with a 13-3 spurt to increase the lead to 13 (72-59). Rulon tallied eight points on two three-pointers and a layup. Sangare's jump shot with 8:58 left in the fourth got Lehman within eight (80-72). Rowan then pulled away with a 19-3 run in the span of 4:24. Szymczyk led the charge with six points. The Profs had their largest lead at 24 (99-75) and cruised to the victory.
 
Rowan resumes conference play with a 6 p.m. contest at Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
