CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team defeated Rutgers-Camden, 83-64 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday evening.
The Profs are 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Scarlet Raptors (4-1) suffered their first loss of the season and have a 1-1 NJAC mark.
Rowan began the fourth quarter with a 58-48 lead before Rutgers-Camden cut the deficit to three with seven straight points. Guard Jovan Childers (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) hit a jumper (9:47) and guard Gabby Greene (so. Howell, NJ/Howell) made a jump shot (9:09) and a three-pointer (8:49). The Profs responded with an 18-0 run to put the game out of reach. Guard/forward
Alex Raring (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) led the charge with eight points and guard
Anyssa Sanchez (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Sterling) had four.
Raring finished the contest with a career-high 20 points. Sanchez totaled 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Center
April Szymczyk (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) produced 13 points and guard
Valerie Garofalo (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) added eight. Forward
Kailyn Sytsma (fr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) and guard
Alexis Kriley (fr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) grabbed six and five rebounds respectively.
Childers posted a game-high 21 points for the Scarlet Raptors. Greene followed with 19 and forward/center Michelle Obasi (jr. Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) netted 10. Guard/forward Cara Racobaldo (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) and Obasi brought down seven boards apiece. Forward/center Caroline Santiago (sr. Buena, NJ/Buena Reg.) registered six rebounds and Racobaldo dished five assists.
Rutgers-Camden had its largest lead of the game at eight (18-10) after an Obasi jumper with 4:30 left in the opening quarter. The Profs went on a 15-6 run for their first lead (25-24) with 7:38 to play in the second. Six different players scored in the stretch. Greene's three put the Scarlet Raptors ahead, 29-27 (6:22). Rowan was up by eight (40-32) in the third before Rutgers-Camden scored nine of 11 to close the gap to one (42-41) with 6:24 on the clock. The Profs netted eight in a row then the Scarlet Raptors had the next six points and the score was 50-47 (3:42). Rowan ended the period with an 8-1 surge. Raring recorded four points and Kriley and Szymczyk had two apiece.
The Profs return home for a conference tilt versus William Paterson University on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m.
