Box Score NEWARK, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark men's soccer team won 3-1 over visiting Rowan University in a conference battle on Saturday night.
With the win, the Scarlet Raiders move into first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings. They are 15-2 overall with a 6-1 conference mark. The Profs are 12-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the NJAC. This week, Rowan was ranked third in the nation and first in the South Atlantic Region while Rutgers-Newark was fifth in the region.
The Scarlet Raiders scored one goal in the first half. Forward Fabio De Sousa (fr. Long Branch, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) hit the lower right corner of the Profs' net at 2:38 after pass into the box by midfielder Breno Lustosa (so. Kearny, NJ/Kearny).
In the second stanza, De Sousa recorded his second marker at 67:14. Lustosa brought the ball down the sidelines and hit De Sousa with a long pass. At 75:20, forward Alex Torres (jr. Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) produced the third goal.
Forward
Burak Ozdemir (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) spoiled the shutout at 87:22. He found the ball in a scrum and hit the back of the net.
Rowan goalkeeper
Kyle Dennis (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and Rutgers-Newark goalie Andres Medina (fr. St. Benedict's Prep) each made eight saves. Both teams compiled 15 total shots.
Next, Rowan is home against Brooklyn College on Monday, Oct. 17 at 5 p.m.
