EWING, NJ – The College of New Jersey women's basketball team defeated Rowan University, 57-48 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action on Wednesday night.
The Profs have an overall record of 15-6 and they are 10-4 in the NJAC. The Lions are 11-10 and they have a conference mark of 6-8.
Forward Jessica Goldbach (sr. Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) led all scorers with 15 points and she had eight rebounds for TCNJ. Guard Kylie O'Donnell (sr. Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) scored 14 points and handed out five assists. Guard Kelly Coughlin (sr. Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) added 11 points and six boards. Forward Christina Merlin (jr. North Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr) corralled 11 rebounds.
For Rowan, center
Kate Matthews (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) totaled 12 points and nine boards. Guard
Bria Hill (sr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) registered nine points. Guards
Anyssa Sanchez (so. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) and
Kaitlin Schullstrom (jr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) tallied seven and six points respectively.
The contest was tied at nine (14:06) then Rowan went on an 11-0 run to take a 20-9 lead (6:15). Forward
Melissa Lake (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) scored four points, guard
Ashanti Bishop (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) had three points and forward
Summer Crilley (fr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) and Matthews chipped in with two apiece. TCNJ responded by pouring in the final 16 points of the first half for a 25-20 advantage at the break. O'Donnell registered eight straight points, Goldbach scored six and guard Jess Lynch (jr. Newtown, CT/Newtown) contributed two.
In the second half, the Lions recorded the first three points for a 28-20 lead (18:10). Hill's layup made it 37-29 with 14:39 left. TCNJ scored the next five points to extend its margin to 13 points (42-29) at the 13:55 mark. The Lions were in front 46-33 (10:51) then a 10-0 spurt by Rowan trimmed the deficit to three points (46-43) with 4:23 remaining. Matthews had six points and Schullstrom four. Hill hit a triple (1:22) to make the score 51-48. TCNJ then knocked down six straight free throws, two each by Coughlin (0:45), O'Donnell (0:29) and guard Angelica Esposito (jr. Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) (0:19), to ice the game.
Rowan returns home for the 7K Giveaway Game on Saturday, February 7 against Kean University at 5 p.m.
