GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team won 72-53 against conference opponent Kean University on Saturday evening.
The Profs are 16-6 overall and 11-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Cougars have a 12-10 record with a 7-8 conference mark.
Guard
Bria Hill (sr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) led Rowan with 18 points. Center
Kate Matthews (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) produced a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Guard
Anyssa Sanchez (so. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) contributed with 10 points and six boards. Guard
Valerie Garofalo (so. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) and forward
Summer Crilley (fr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) each had seven points. Guard
Kaitlin Schullstrom (jr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) pulled down seven boards.
For Kean, center Najha Treadwell (fr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored a game-high 23 points and she grabbed 12 rebounds. Forward Jazmine Davis (jr. Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Reg.) registered 10 points and eight rebounds. Guards AnnaRose Pierre (sr. East Orange, NJ/Newark Tech) and Shanice Jones (sr. Newark, NJ/Newark Tech) added eight and seven points respectively. Guard Jaquetta Owens (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) dished six assists and Pierre tallied nine boards.
The Profs started the second stanza with a 19-2 run to lead 59-39 at 11:51. Six different players contributed with points and Sanchez lead the way with six. Schullstrom made two foul shots (4:43) for a 27-point advantage (70-43), which was Rowan's biggest lead of the contest. Kean followed with 10 consecutive points (70-53) and center
Brittany Barilla (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) scored the last basket with 10 seconds on the clock.
In the first half, Rowan was ahead 22-16 at 9:53 after a jumper by Hill. Kean followed with 10 straight points to lead by four (26-22) with 7:39 remaining. Treadwell scored eight of the 10 points. Davis' layup made the score 29-24 (6:05). The Cougars had a seven-point advantage (35-28) at the 3:50 mark. The Profs then recorded a 9-0 run to take the lead 37-35 (1:12). Treadwell's basket knotted the score at 37 with 1:06 left. Hill drained a three (0:57), which put the Profs ahead 40-37 at the break. Treadwell was the leader in the period with 21 points and seven rebounds. Hill totaled 15 points and Matthews had 11.
Next week, Rowan travels to nationally ranked Montclair State University on Wednesday, February 11 for a 6 p.m. conference game.
