Kris O'Connor scored the winning basket for the Rowan University men's basketball team in a 62-60 victory at William Paterson University on Wednesday night. It was the final game of the regular season.
O'Connor (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) recorded the game-winner with 0.5 seconds left. The Profs have a 16-9 record and they are the fifth seed (10-8) in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament. Rowan travels to the fourth seed Rutgers-Newark (17-8, NJAC 11-7) on Saturday, February 21 for a first round game at 7 p.m. The Pioneers are 19-6 overall and 13-5 in the conference. William Paterson is seeded second in the conference tournament and receives a first round bye.
O'Connor ended the contest with 12 points. He was five for seven from the floor with two three-pointers. Forward
TJ Booth (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) scored a career-high 14 points. Forward
Chris Gross (jr. Cranford, NJ/Roselle Catholic) contributed with eight points and five rebounds. Forward
Ike Robinson (jr. Trenton, NJ/Conwell-Egan Catholic (PA)) totaled seven points and seven boards. Forward
Mike Simpson (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) added six points and five rebounds.
For the Pioneers, guard Sandy Burgos (sr. Fort Lee, NJ/Fort Lee) produced a game-high 21 points and he grabbed seven rebounds. Guard Galen Smith (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway Tech) came off the bench for 12 points. Forward James McLane (jr. Belleville, NJ/Queen of Peace) collected six points and six boards.
With 2:06 remaining in the game, Robinson's free throw gave the Profs a six-point advantage (56-50). William Paterson went ahead 57-56 (0:46) after Smith nailed two threes (1:58, 0:46) and Burgos had a foul shot in between (1:34). O'Connor made a jumper (0:32) and Booth had two points at the line (0:19), which put Rowan ahead 60-57. Burgos tied the score at 60 with a three-pointer at the eight-second mark.
The Profs started the second stanza with a 9-2 spurt to lead 37-30 at 15:51. Booth scored seven points and O'Connor had two. Robinson's jump shot (12:41) made the score 40-32. Smith (12:30) and Burgos (12:07) had back-to-back threes and the Pioneers trailed by two (40-38). Rowan was up 41-39 (10:24) then built a 12-point advantage (51-39) at 7:46 with 10 unanswered points. William Paterson followed with a 9-0 run to pull within three (51-48) at 5:15. Burgos posted five of the nine points. He had two foul shots (4:20), which cut the deficit to two points (52-50). Rowan forward

There were six lead changes in the first half. Burgos hit a three-pointer (3:49) and the Pioneers were up 26-21. Rowan followed with seven straight points to go ahead 28-26 with 1:18 left. Center
Dan Brogan (jr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) sank two foul shots (3:08), Robinson drained a three (1:58) and Brogan had a layup (1:18). McLane's jumper tied the score at 28 (0:34) and it was still knotted at the break.
