CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team remains undefeated after a 69-58 win at Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday night.
The Profs are 6-0 overall and they are 2-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Scarlet Raptors have an overall mark of 3-2 and they have a 1-1 record in the conference.
Guard/forward
Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) tallied 19 points, five rebounds and three assists. Guard
Anyssa Sanchez (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Guard/forward
Ashanti Bishop (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and guard
Summer Crilley (so. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) chipped in with nine points apiece. Guard
Valerie Garofalo (jr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) and forward
Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) each added seven points. Matthews also corralled 13 rebounds and Garofalo handed out eight assists.
For Rutgers-Camden, guard/forward Kamari Talley (sr. Camden, NJ/Creative Arts) scored a game-high 24 points and had 16 rebounds. Guard/forward Cara Racobaldo (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) collected 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Sanchez opened the game with a layup (9:20) and a jumper (8:42) for a 4-0 Rowan lead. The Profs were ahead 14-10 after a triple by Sanchez (4:06). Rutgers-Camden then tallied eight straight points to take its first lead, 18-14 (1:50). The Profs responded with a 10-0 run to end the first quarter, that included five points by Schullstrom, to go back out in front, 24-18.
The Scarlet Raptors started the second stanza with a 9-2 run and led 27-26 (4:36). Racobaldo tallied five points and Talley had four. Rowan recorded the next six points on jumpers by Bishop (4:01), by Garofalo (2:21) and Bishop (1:03), making the score 32-27. Forward Olivia Crenny (so. Blackwood, NJ/Camden Catholic) sank two free throws at the 44-second mark and the score was 32-29 at the break.
In the third, the score was knotted at 35 (7:20), 36 (6:56), 41 (4:38) and 43 (3:45). Rowan collected the next 12 points to take its largest lead, 55-43 heading into the fourth quarter. Five different Profs scored, including three points each by Crilley and Schullstrom.
Rutgers-Camden trimmed the deficit to 10 points (57-47) on a layup by guard Ariel Robinson (fr. Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) (6:40). Schullstrom then nailed a three-pointer (6:23) and made two-free throws (5:38), extending the advantage to 15 (62-47). The Scarlet Raptors got to within in eight points twice in the final minutes, but Rowan came away with the 11-point victory.
Next, Rowan hosts New Jersey City University on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m.
