GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team defeated New Jersey City University, 88-45 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
The Profs stay perfect with a 7-0 overall record and they are 3-0 in the conference. This is the second straight season that Rowan has won its first seven games. Last year, the Profs won nine games to open the campaign. The Gothic Knights have an overall mark of 1-5 and a 0-3 record in the NJAC.
Guard/forward
Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) led all scorers with 22 points. Guard
Olivia Rulon (fr. Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) collected 12 points off the bench. Guard/forwards
Melissa Lake (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and
Alex Raring (so. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) each chipped in with eight points. Forward
Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) grabbed eight rebounds and added four points.
For NJCU, guard/forward Christine Bizub (fr. Fort Lee, NJ/Fort Lee) contributed with 11 points. Forward/center Sharaunda Fiedtkou (so. West Orange, NJ/Bayonne) scored 10 points and had six rebounds. Guard/forward Deseree Johnson (sr. Red Bank, NJ/Monmouth Reg.) had seven points.
Rowan recorded the first 20 points of the contest, including 14 by Schullstrom. The Profs extended their advantage to 23 (27-4) with 3:26 to play on a layup by guard/forward
Ashanti Bishop (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield). NJCU tallied the next six points, making the score 27-10 with 1:46 on the clock. Rowan collected the final five of the quarter and led 32-10 after one. Rowan expanded its lead to 30 points (42-12) with 5:20 remaining in the second quarter. Rulon hit a triple (0:11) to make the halftime tally 54-21.
In the third, Bizub's three-pointer made it 59-29 (4:58). Rowan then went on a 15-2 run to take its largest advantage, 74-31 (0:41). The Profs maintained the 40-plus point cushion for the fourth quarter and came away with the 43-point victory.
Rowan travels to The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 6 p.m.
