Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The New Jersey City University men's basketball team defeated Rowan University, 58-55 on Saturday afternoon.
The Gothic Knights improve to 7-11 overall and 5-7 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Profs are 12-8 overall and they drop to 6-7 in the conference.
Forward Neville Joseph (sr. Newark, NJ/West Side) led NJCU with 18 points and seven rebounds. Guard Khalid Muhammad (jr. Orange, NJ/Orange) contributed with nine points and guard Joseph Kelley (fr. Newark, NJ/University) added eight.
For Rowan, forward
Ike Robinson (jr. Trenton, NJ/Conwell-Egan Catholic (PA)) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards. Forward
Chris Gross (jr. Cranford, NJ/Roselle Catholic) totaled nine points and eight rebounds. Forward
Daniel Waynick (sr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) produced eight points while forward
Mike Simpson (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) and center
Dan Brogan (jr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) each scored seven.
In the second half, NJCU had its biggest lead of 14 points (41-27) after two foul shots (17:39) by guard Jourdan Roberson (sr. Brooklyn, NY/University (Newark)). Rowan pulled within six points (41-35) at 15:26 with eight consecutive points. Robinson ended the run with a layup and free throw. Roberson's jumper at 7:44 made the score 50-45. The Profs trailed by one (50-49) after a three by Robinson (6:02) and a free throw from forward
TJ Booth (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown). Kelley's basket (2:07) put the Gothic Knights back up by five (56-51). Gross (1:53) and Waynick (0:25) each hit a jump shot for a one-point deficit (56-55). Guard David Cole (jr. Avenel, NJ/Colonia) sealed the win with two foul shots at the two second mark.
The Profs started the game with a 13-6 run in 6:49. Robinson scored six points while Gross and Simpson added four and three points respectively. Brogan sank two foul shots (10:44) to lead 15-12. The Gothic Knights answered with a layup by Kelly (10:09) and guard Justin Harte (sr. Irvington, NJ/Irvington) hit a three (9:54) to go ahead 17-15. Booth had two points at the line (9:21), which tied the score. Harte's three-pointer with 8:11 remaining put NJCU ahead 22-19. Joseph's basket at (5:05) gave the Gothic Knights an eight-point advantage (31-23). Robinson had two free throws and Rowan trailed 31-25 with 4:31 on the clock. The Gothic Knights closed out the half with eight straight points to lead 39-25 at the break. Joseph led all scorers with 13 points in the first period.
Rowan travels to The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, February 4 for an 8 p.m. conference game.
