Women's Basketball Completes Third Consecutive Comeback To Defeat Rutgers-Newark, 61-52

NEWARK, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team used a second half comeback to win its third straight game, 61-52 over Rutgers-Newark on Saturday night.
 
The Profs are now 12-3 overall and they are 8-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Scarlet Raiders are 9-7 with a 5-4 conference mark.
 
Guard Bria Hill (sr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) led the Profs with 14 points. Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (jr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Valerie Garofalo (so. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) added 10 points. Guards Jade Bonder (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Anyssa Sanchez (so. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) tallied nine and eight points respectively. Guard Ashanti Bishop (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) grabbed eight rebounds.
 
For Rutgers-Newark, center Sharee Gordon (sr. Newark, NJ/University) topped all scorers with 16 points and had eight rebounds. Guard Shala Glenn (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) totaled 15 points, while forward Jade Howard (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Joseph's (Hammonton)) chipped in with 13. Guards Maria Simmons (so. Irvington, NJ/Irvington) and Arianna Williams (jr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) each corralled nine rebounds.
 
Glenn hit a jumper (19:55) and Gordon made a layup (19:19) for a 4-0 Rutgers-Newark lead. Rowan responded with a center Kate Matthews (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) layup (19:02) and Hill's three-pointer (18:27) for a 5-4 advantage. The score was then tied at 11 (16:33), 14 (15:12) and 19 (8:01). The Profs used a 10-3 run to take a 29-22 lead (4:49). Sanchez registered six points and Schullstrom had four. The Scarlet Raiders scored eight of the final 10 points of the half, making the score 31-30 at the break. Gordon produced five points and Glenn had three.
 
In the second half, Glenn and Simmons hit back-to-back baskets to put Rutgers-Newark back out in front, 36-35 (16:39). The Scarlet Raiders led 38-37 (16:01) then Rowan scored the next five points for a 42-38 advantage (14:57). The game was tied at 42 with 13:33 left. Rutgers-Newark was ahead 50-47 after a basket by Gordon (9:11). The Profs tallied the next 12 points to take a 59-50 lead (0:31). Schullstrom and Garofalo scored five points apiece and Bishop added two.

Rowan hosts Richard Stockton College on Wednesday, January 21 at 6 p.m.
