Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The William Paterson University men's basketball team won 86-84 at Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Pioneers had five players in double figures. Guard Sandy Burgos (sr. Fort Lee, NJ/Fort Lee) totaled 19 points and seven rebounds. Guard/forward Terik Bridgeman (jr. Harlem, NY/Nia Prep) followed with 17 points and seven boards. Guard Bright Mensah (jr. Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) and forward James McLane (jr. Belleville, NJ/Queen of Peace) each chipped in with 13 points. Mensah also registered eight rebounds and five assists. Guard Zach Frick (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) had 10 points.
William Paterson and Rowan are both 12-2 overall. The Pioneers are 7-1 in the conference while the Profs have a 6-2 NJAC mark. Forward Ike Robinson (jr. Trenton, NJ/Conwell-Egan Catholic (PA)) recorded a season-high 33 points and eight boards. Forward Mike Simpson (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) produced 15 points. Center Dan Brogan (jr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) and forward Daniel Waynick (sr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) had 10 points apiece. Guard Kris O'Connor (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) collected eight points, six assists and five steals.
In the second stanza, the Profs scored four straight foul shots (9:51) because of a foul and a technical and they were down by one (62-61). Guard Josh Borrelli (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and Robinson each had two points at the line. Robinson put Rowan ahead (63-62) with a basket at 9:16 and he later tied the game (65-65) at 8:26. William Paterson was on top until O'Connor's free throw (3:37) made the score 73-73. Brogan followed with a layup (3:09). McLane had two points (2:49) at the charity stripe and the score was tied, 75-75. Robinson's basket (2:27) gave Rowan the lead (77-75) for the last time. Burgos (2:10) and Frick (1:11) drained three-pointers. Brogan had two foul shots (0:57) and the Profs were down by two (81-79). Guard Turrell McClendon (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway Tech) scored with a layup (0:48) and Simpson drilled a three (0:43). William Paterson was up by one (83-82) then had a free throw from Burgos (0:39) and two by Frick (0:13). Waynick's basket with two seconds left ended the contest.
The score was tied five times in the first half and there were three lead changes. Burgos hit a three at 13:52, which knotted the score at 16. The Profs followed with a 7-1 run for a six-point advantage (23-17) with 12:04 remaining. Simpson contributed with five points while O'Connor added a basket. William Paterson went ahead 26-25 (9:18) after a 9-2 spurt. McLane had five of the seven points. Simpson's three-pointer (8:43) tied the score at 28.
The Pioneers answered with nine straight points to lead 37-28 (6:06). Burgos led the way with four points while Bridgeman and McClendon produced three and two points respectively. With 2:46 left, Bridgeman made two foul shots for a seven-point lead (39-32). Rowan cut the deficit to three (39-36) after a three from Borrelli and a free throw by Brogan. Bridgeman recorded a tip-in (1:01) and Burgos made the first of two foul shots (1:01) on a technical. At the 10-second mark, Robinson posted a tip-in and free throw. The Profs trailed 42-39 at the intermission.
Rowan continues its conference schedule at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, January 17 at 8 p.m.
