UNION, NJ – Rowan University won its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest at Kean University, 67-53 on Thursday night.
The Profs are now 6-15 overall and they are 5-9 in the NJAC. The Cougars have an overall mark of 11-9 and a conference record of 8-5.
Guard Jade Bonder (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) led Rowan with a career-high 18 points.
Center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Guards Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) and Anyssa Sanchez (fr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) each scored nine points. Schullstrom also tallied a career-high eight assists. Forward Megan Russ (sr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) and guard Bria Hill (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) grabbed eight and seven boards respectively.
Guard AnnaRose Pierre (jr. East Orange, NJ/Newark Tech) scored 13 points to lead Kean. Guard Aysha Harris (fr. Freeport, NY/Freeport) added 11 points. Guard Jazmine Davis (so. Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Reg.) and center Eboni Wood (fr. Union City, NJ/Union City) tallied eight points apiece. Davis also recorded nine rebounds, while Wood had six.
The game was tied at four early on, then Rowan scored six straight points to take a 10-4 lead (13:32). Matthews scored four points and Schullstrom added two. The Profs led 17-10 (10:28) after a layup and free throw Matthews. Kean tallied the next five points to cut the deficit to 17-15 (8:25). Rowan responded with a 19-4 run to end the half and take a 36-19 advantage into the break. Forward Allison Murphy (so. West Deptford, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) scored six points, Schullstrom had five, Hill recorded four, Bonder added three and Matthews made one.
The Profs held a 43-28 lead at the 15:16 mark of the second stanza. Rowan used a 13-4 spurt for its largest lead of 24 points (56-32) with 10:54 to play. Bonder had eight points, Matthews added three and Sanchez scored two. The Profs had a 59-35 advantage (8:59), but Kean used an 18-4 run to get to within 10 points (63-53) at 1:12. Pierre scored seven points, while Wood had six, Harris tallied three and guard Shanice Jones (jr. Newark, NJ/Newark Tech) made two free throws. Bonder and Matthews each hit two free throws in the last 1:07 to make the final margin 14 points.
Rowan will host Ramapo College on Saturday, February 8 at 5 p.m.
