NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark defeated Rowan University, 66-50 in a conference game on Saturday night.
Forward Jade Howard (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Joseph's (Hammonton)) scored a game-high 22 points for Rutgers-Newark. She also grabbed 13 rebounds. Forward Jasmine Daniels (sr. Lodi, NJ/Lodi) recorded 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Guard Jamie Cejour-Mobley (fr. East Orange, NJ/East Orange) and center Sharee Gordon (jr. Newark, NJ/University) tallied 11 and eight points respectively.
The Profs are now 6-18 overall and they are 5-12 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Scarlet Raiders have an overall mark of 10-13 and a conference record of 6-11. Guard Bria Hill (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) led Rowan with 12 points and eight rebounds. Center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) produced 11 points and five boards. Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) had eight points and four assists, while guard Anyssa Sanchez (fr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) added six points and five rebounds.
The score was tied at four early on, but six straight points by the Scarlet Raiders gave them a 10-4 lead (14:46). Howard had three points, Gordon scored two and guard Shala Glenn (fr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) added one. A Matthews' jumper made the score 12-8 (13:03). Rutgers-Newark then used a 6-2 spurt for an 18-10 advantage with 9:01 on the clock. Forward Jasmine Lombard (fr. Hillside, NJ/Hillside) tallied four points and Cejour-Mobley produced two.
Matthews cut the deficit to six (25-19) with a jumper at the 2:26 mark. Rutgers-Newark went on a 7-1 run to extend its lead to 32-20 (0:30). Cejour-Mobley scored three points, while Lombard and Howard had two apiece. Sanchez drained a jumper (0:18) to make the halftime score 32-22. Howard recorded 12 points in the first half.
Matthews' jumper started the second half and trimmed the Scarlet Raider advantage to eight, 32-24 (19:08). Rutgers-Newark then took 6:27 of the clock during a 20-6 run, for a 52-30 lead (12:41). Daniels and Gordon each scored six points and Howard had four. Guard Arianna Williams (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) and Glenn tallied two points apiece. The score was 58-35 (8:56), then Rowan scored the next eight points to make the score 58-43 (5:13). Hill had five points and Sanchez registered three. Rutgers-Newark scored four straight for a 62-43 advantage (4:36).
A pair of free throws by Howard gave the Scarlet Raiders a 20-point advantage, 66-46 with 2:35 left on the clock. The Profs scored the final four points of the game on a free throw (2:19) by guard Mandy Jiang (fr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny), a layup (1:01) by center Annie Wenz (fr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) and a free throw (0:23) by guard Shaniece Bannister (fr. Irvington, NJ/St. Mary of the Assumption).
