Women's Basketball Defeats Ramapo, 81-56 In NJAC Opener

MAHWAH, NJ  – The Rowan University women's basketball team defeated Ramapo College, 81-56 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon. 
 
The Profs are undefeated with a 4-0 record.  It was the first loss on the season for the 3-1 Roadrunners. 
 
Rowan had 11 players that scored and four were in double figures.  Guard Valerie Garofalo (so. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) contributed with 12 points.  Guards Anyssa Sanchez (so. Stratford, NJ/Sterling), Bria Hill (sr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) and Kaitlin Schullstrom (jr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) followed with 11 points apiece.  Hill also grabbed six rebounds.  Forward Kyanna Filmore (fr. Sickerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) pulled down a game-high nine boards.
 
For Ramapo, forward Kellie Lane (so. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) scored 13 points off the bench.  Guard Jackie Jerkovich (sr. Secaucus, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) registered nine points while guard Raven Jones (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) added eight.  Guard/forward Bintou Berete (so. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) collected six points and seven rebounds. 
 
The Profs were ahead 46-22 after the first half.  Berete's jumper at 13:01 put Ramapo up 15-11.  Rowan answered with a 20-2 run to lead by 14 (31-17) with 9:56 remaining.  Garofalo produced eight points and Schullstrom had six to lead the way.  Hill hit a basket (4:27), which made the score 39-19.  Jerkovich followed with a jump shot (3:14) and the Roadrunners trailed 39-21.  Hill had a jumper (2:21), Schullstrom sank a three (1:56) and Sanchez scored a bucket (1:45) after a steal for a 25-point advantage (46-21).  With 27 seconds on the clock, Lane hit a free throw for the final point of the period.  Schullstrom led all scorers with 11 points.
 
In the second half, Lane's jumper (16:03) pulled Ramapo within 22 points (52-30).  Filmore had a basket that gave Rowan a 29-point advantage (61-32) at 12:23.  The Profs' biggest lead of the game was 31 (64-33) after a foul shot by forward Summer Crilley (fr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit).  The Roadunners were down 68-44 after Jones had a jumper at 6:31.  Sanchez followed with a basket (6:19) and guard Jade Bonder (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) made two free throws (6:05) to lead 72-44.  Guard Ashanti Bishop's (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) jump shot (1:50) put the Profs ahead by 29 points (77-48). Forward Alyson Oostdyk (jr. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) had a jumper and foul shot (0:23) for Ramapo and Bishop ended the game with two points at the line (0:12). 
 
Rowan travels to conference opponent Richard Stockton College on Tuesday, November 25 for a 6 p.m. game.
