DOYLESTOWN, PA – The Rowan University women's basketball team used a second half comeback to defeat Delaware Valley College, 64-59 on Wednesday night.
The Profs have started the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2004-05 campaign. The Aggies have a mark of 1-2.
Rowan trailed 50-39 with 12:32 to play in the second half and ended the game on a 25-9 run. Guard
Bria Hill (sr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) scored nine points and guard
Anyssa Sanchez (so. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) tallied seven.
Hill connected on a jumper to tie the game at 50 (8:12). A layup by forward/guard Brenna Coll (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Springside) put Delaware Valley out in front 52-50 (7:47). Hill knocked down a three-pointer (6:35) to give the Profs the lead back, 55-54. With 2:25 remaining, guard Bridget Sobon (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) tied the score at 59. Forward
Melissa Lake (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) made a free throw (1:34) to put Rowan ahead for good. Sanchez went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final 21 seconds to ice the game.
Sanchez poured in a career-high 26 points and grabbed six rebounds. Hill produced 12 points, while guard
Jade Bonder (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added eight. Center
Kate Matthews (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) scored six points and collected six rebounds.
Guard Eireann Anastasi (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Saint Hubert) led Delaware Valley with 19 points. Coll produced 16 points and six rebounds. Guard Agatha Drozd (sr. Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain E.) had eight points and center Shannon Barlow (sr. Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) corralled eight rebounds.
Delaware Valley scored the first five points of the game on a layup by Coll and three-pointer by Anastasi. Rowan responded with 11 straight points, including seven from Sanchez and led 11-5 (16:00).
The Profs were ahead 14-13 (12:27) then the Aggies used a 10-2 run to take a 23-16 lead (6:37). Delaware Valley continued to hold the advantage by as many as nine points (27-18, 3:25). Lake recorded a layup (0:32), making the score 27-23, but Sobon put in a basket at the buzzer to give the Aggies a 29-23 halftime lead.
Delaware Valley led 34-23 after a layup by Barlow at 19:19 in the second half. Rowan trimmed the deficit to 38-34 (15:16) on a Matthews layup. The Aggies then scored eight straight points to extend the advantage to 12 (46-34) at the 13:32 mark. Anastasi and Drozd each tallied four points. Drozd's free throw (12:32) gave the Aggies a 50-39 lead.
Rowan travels to Ramapo College for the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, November 22 at 1 p.m.
