GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team defeated Penn State Brandywine, 89-53 in its home opener on Monday night.
The Profs have an overall record of 2-0. It was the first game of the season for the Lions.
Guard
Valerie Garofalo (so. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) scored a career-high 21 points, including four three-pointers and was 7-of-8 from the field. Guard
Bria Hill (sr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) produced 13 points and seven rebounds. Guard
Ashanti Bishop (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) added 13 points and eight rebounds. Guard
Kaitlin Schullstrom (jr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) registered nine points, eight boards and five assists.
For Penn State Brandywine, guard Stacey MacArthur (so. Newtown Square, PA/Delco Christian) recorded 12 points. Guard Jilly Gledhill (jr. Secane, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) tallied 10 points. Forward Alyssa Abbonizio (fr. Springfield, PA/Springfield) scored nine points and had seven rebounds. Forward Lauren Munro (jr. Glenolden, PA/Interboro) added seven points and seven boards.
The Profs scored the first seven points of the contest on baskets by Hill and center
Kate Matthews (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) and a
Jade Bonder (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) three-pointer. A MacArthur jumper made the score 9-5 (15:18) then Rowan tallied 12 straight points for a 21-5 lead (12:01). Garofalo recorded five points, while Schullstrom had three. Forward
Melissa Lake (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Hill had two apiece.
Rowan took a 32-9 advantage (6:13) on a layup by Matthews. Bishop's layup with 1:21 to play made the score 44-21. She then hit another layup (0:29) to give the Profs a 48-24 lead going into the break.
MacArthur made a basket (53-33) with 15:27 on the clock in the second half. The Profs then used an 11-0 run to extend their advantage to 64-33 (12:48). Schullstrum registered four points during the spurt. A free throw by guard
Aleyah Dupree (fr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) extended the Rowan lead to 82-42 (6:58). The Profs were ahead 89-45 (2:53), then the Lions scored the final eight points of the game.
Next, Rowan travels to Delaware Valley College on Wednesday, November 19 at 6 p.m.
