Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men's basketball team won 74-57 over Lehman College in the championship of the Rowan Invitational on Sunday.
The Profs have a 2-0 record while the Lightning has a 1-1 mark. In the first round on Saturday, Rowan defeated Penn State Brandywine, 107-69 while Lehman won 78-74 in double overtime against Neumann University. In the consolation game, Neumann had a 79-69 victory over Brandywine.
Guard
Kris O'Connor (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) led Rowan with a career-high 24 points. He was named the invitational's Most Valuable Player. Forward
Chris Gross (jr. Cranford, NJ/Roselle Catholic) contributed with 14 points and six rebounds while forward
Daniel Waynick (sr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) chipped in with 10 points. Forward
Ike Robinson (jr. Trenton, NJ/Conwell-Egan Catholic (PA)) added eight points and nine boards. Gross and Robinson were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
For Lehman, guard Andrew Utate (fr. Washington Heights, NY/Mt. St. Michael's Academy) scored 14 points. Guard Jonathan Greenfield (sr. Hartford, CT/Windsor) produced 11 points and forward Jerrome Jones (jr. Bronx, NY/Mount Vernon) followed with 10. Forward Chaun Miller (jr. Brooklyn, NY/Eleanor Roosevelt) and Greenfield were members of the All-Tournament Team.
The Profs started the game with a 10-0 run in 3:36. O'Connor totaled the first eight points and Gross followed with a basket. Jones' layup at 14:44 cut the deficit to five (12-7). Lehman trailed 21-16 at 10:28 then Rowan had a layup and foul shot by center
Dan Brogan (jr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) and Waynick made a basket (9:50) for a 10 point advantage (26-16). Greenfield's two foul shots (9:32) pulled the Lightning within eight (26-18). Gross hit a jump shot (8:23), which made the score 30-20. Jones had a layup at 2:21 to pull Lehman within six points (37-31). The Profs ended the half with three straight baskets for a 12-point advantage (43-31) at the break. Waynick (1:49), Gross (1:22) and O'Connor (0:03) each had one.
In the second period, O'Connor's jumper (17:03) put the Profs ahead by 16 points (47-31). The Lightning followed with a 10-2 run to pull within eight points (49-41) at 13:35. Utate scored all 10 points and he ended the surge with two three-pointers. Miller's layup cut the deficit to six (53-47) with 11:18 remaining. Rowan built a 14-point advantage (61-47) at 8:37 with eight unanswered points. Gross scored four points while Waynick and Robinson had two apiece.
Jones hit a jumper (6:13) and Lehman was down 61-52. The Profs ended the game with a 13-5 run for the invitational title. O'Connor totaled six of the 13 points.
Rowan starts its conference schedule at Ramapo College on Saturday, November 22 at 3 p.m.
