GLASSBORO, NJ – The College of New Jersey women's basketball team won 81-57 at Rowan University in a conference game on Wednesday night.
The Lions are 9-2 overall and they are undefeated in the New Jersey Athletic Conference with a 6-0 mark. The Profs have a 3-9 record and they are 2-3 in the conference.
Guard Kelly Roddy (sr. Belmar, NJ/St. Rose) led TCNJ with 16 points and six rebounds. Guard Kelly Coughlin (jr. Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) contributed with 12 points off the bench. Forward Christina Merlin (so. North Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr) chipped in with eight points while guard Colleen Duffy (sr. Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) and forward Katy Amato (fr. Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) added seven points apiece. Guard Kylie O'Donnell (jr. Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) collected five assists.
For Rowan, guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) scored 11 points and guard Bria Hill (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) followed with nine. Guard Jade Bonder (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) registered eight points. Center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) grabbed nine rebounds and scored six points.
TCNJ started the game with a 16-4 run in 5:14. Roddy led the way with seven points. Rowan trailed by eight (19-11) at 10:52 after a layup by guard Alex Raring (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.). The Lions had a 9-2 run to lead 28-13 with 8:53 remaining. Guard Jess Lynch's (so. Sandy Hook, CT/Newtown) basket put TCNJ ahead by 16 points (34-18) at 5:29. Hill cut the deficit to nine (38-29) with a layup (1:59). Merlin had a basket, which made the score 44-29 (0:11) and Bonder ended period with a three-pointer (0:02). The Lions were ahead 44-32 at the intermission and Roddy was the scoring leader with 10 points.
In the second half, Rowan pulled within nine points (46-37) at 18:04 after a three-pointer by Schullstrom. Matthews had a basket at 15:09 and the Profs trailed 49-39. TCNJ scored 18 straight points to lead by 28 (67-39) with 8:51 remaining. It was the Lions' biggest lead of the game. Coughlin produced eight points in the surge.
Next, Rowan plays at conference opponent Ramapo College on Saturday, January 11 at 1 p.m.
