Women's Basketball Falls at Wesley, 71-57

DOVER, DE – Rowan University dropped a non-conference game at Wesley College, 71-57 on Monday night.
 
The Profs are now 3-8 overall and the Wolverines have a 2-7 record. Guard Brionna Johnson (fr. Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) led all scorers with 22 points for Wesley and grabbed 14 rebounds. Forward Tiara White (so. Philadelphia, PA/Padua Academy) also recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Roniece Williams (jr. Seaford, DE/Seaford) added 10 points, while guard Nicole Evanko (so. New Britain, CT/Sport and Medical Sciences Academy) chipped in with six points off the bench.
 
Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colt Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Rowan. Center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) recorded 10 points and corralled 14 rebounds. Guard Jade Bonder (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added nine points, while guard Alex Raring (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) tallied seven points.
 
The score was tied at six early in the first half after a free throw by Matthews (14:53), but Wesley scored four straight points for a 10-6 advantage with 14:14 on the clock. Guard Anyssa Sanchez (fr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) made the score 16-15 (7:19) with a jumper and Profs trailed by one. Back-to-back three-pointers by Evanko gave the Wolverines a 22-15 lead at the 6:17 mark. A Raring three-pointer cut the Wesley advantage to 22-18 (5:03). The Wolverines then ended the half on a 10-3 run, which made the score 32-21 at the break. Williams hit a pair of triples during the spurt.
 
The Wolverines extended their lead to 34-21, as Johnson scored the first basket of the second half. A layup by guard Bria Hill (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) cut the deficit to 36-27 (18:03), but Wesley recorded the next four points on two layups by White for a 40-27 (17:02) advantage. Profs' guard Shaniece Bannister (fr. Irvington, NJ/St. Mary of the Assumption) made a three-pointer at the 12:42 mark to make the score 45-37, but the Wolverines responded with five straight points and a 50-37 (12:07) lead. White scored all five points. Rowan then scored seven straight points to pull within six at 50-44 with 9:01 on the clock. Matthews scored four points during the run. Wesley used a 12-0 spurt for its largest lead of 18 points (62-44) with 5:42 left. Johnson scored five points, White tallied three points while forward Karen Wearden (sr. Denton, MD/St. Thomas More) and Williams each added two points during the surge.

Rowan will host The College of New Jersey on Wednesday January 8 at 6 p.m.
