GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team defeated conference opponent Rutgers-Camden, 56-47 on Wednesday night.
Guard Bria Hill (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) led the Profs with 11 points. Guard Anyssa Sanchez (fr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) totaled nine points and nine rebounds. Guard Alex Raring (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) contributed with eight points while guards Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) and Valerie Garofalo (fr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) added seven points apiece. Center Annie Wenz (fr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) collected eight boards.
Rowan improves to 5-14 overall and 4-8 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Scarlet Raptors are 4-13 overall and 0-12 in the conference.
For Rutgers-Camden, guard Krystle Cook (so. Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) scored 13 points and guard Falecia Galindez (so. Camden, NJ/PennsaukenTech) followed with 12. Center Tanjae Lewis (jr. Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Irene Grimanis (jr. Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) grabbed a career-high 20 boards and forward Michelle Onu (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) registered 17.
The score was tied three times in the second half before the Profs took the lead for good. Cook made a layup and foul shot (38-36) with 8:17 left. Hill's jumper knotted the score at 38 (6:37). She had another basket (5:50) and Garofalo made two straight layups (4:56, 4:22) for a seven-point advantage (45-38). Onu sank two free throws (3:26) and the Scarlet Raptors trailed by five points (45-40). Rowan was ahead 53-42 (1:08) after a 5-0 run. Sanchez tallied three points at the line and Garofalo had two. With 27 seconds on the clock, guard Jade Bonder (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had two free throws for an 11-point advantage (56-45). Onu scored the final basket at the 14 second mark.
Rutgers-Camden started the game with a 10-3 run in 3:47. Galindez scored eight points and Lewis had two. Rowan followed with a 5-0 spurt to trail by two (10-8) at 14:27. Raring nailed a three-pointer and center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made two foul shots. The Scarlet Raptors were ahead 13-8 with 10:30 remaining. The Profs produced eight straight points to lead 16-13 at 6:48. Sanchez contributed with four points while Bonder and Schullstrom each added two. Raring had a foul shot (3:52) and Schullstrom made a layup (2:51) to lead by six points (23-17).
Rutgers-Camden pulled within one point (23-22) after a three-pointer by Galindez (2:07) and a jumper from Lewis (1:33). Sanchez's basket at the three-second mark gave the Profs a 25-22 advantage at the end of the half. Galindez scored 11 points in the first period while Grimanis pulled down 11 rebounds.
Rowan hosts conference opponent William Paterson University on Saturday, February 1 at 3 p.m. The game is the Profs' Play 4Kay fundraiser for breast cancer awareness and research. Fans are asked to wear pink to the game.
