Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ –The Rowan University men's basketball team won 75-69 against Rutgers-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
Guard Rich McNamara (sr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds. He moves up to 17th on the school's all-time scorers list with 1,073 career points. Guard Jason Rosenberg (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) contributed with 15 points and nine assists. Guard Phil Jackson (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) chipped in with 13 points and forward Jason Sofman (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) followed with 12. Sofman also grabbed nine boards while Jackson had six. Guard Kris O'Connor (so. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) added seven points and five rebounds.
The Profs are 9-10 overall and 4-8 in the conference. The Scarlet Raptors have a 4-15 record and a 2-10 NJAC mark.
For Rutgers-Camden, forward Alex Smart (jr. Sicklerville,NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) recorded a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Forward Teon Russell (jr. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) totaled 18 points and nine boards. Guard/forward Steven Schneider (so. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) produced 12 points off the bench. Guard John Tatem (so. Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) had nine points and six rebounds.
In the first half, Rowan was ahead 6-2 at 16:41 after a layup by Jackson. Smart hit a jumper at 14:58 and Rutgers-Camden trailed by two (8-6). The Profs followed with a 12-3 run to lead 20-9 with 13:13 remaining. McNamara and Rosenberg each contributed with three points in the run. Schneider hit a three-pointer (10:39) and cut the deficit to three (22-19). Rowan answered with six straight points for a nine-point advantage (28-19) at 7:59.
Forward Chris Gross' (so. Cranford, NJ/Roselle Catholic) basket put the Profs up by 12 points (34-22) with 6:19 left. Rutgers-Camden had a 5-0 spurt which made the score 34-27 at the 3:24 mark. Smart produced three points while Russell had two. Schneider hit a three (1:43) and Russell had a layup (0:47). McNamara sank two foul shots (0:07) to lead 38-32 at the intermission. He was the scoring leader in the period with 15 points.
Rosenberg's layup at 12:59 in the second stanza put Rowan up 53-43. The Profs led 64-48 at 7:55 after eight straight points. Rosenberg scored three points, guard Tim McDaniels (sr. Mount Holly, NJ/Lenape) had a three and Jackson hit a jumper. Smart had two baskets (4:49, 3:30) and Russell made one (3:56) to pull within eight points (65-57). O'Connor sank two free throws with 1:19 left to lead 70-59. Tatem had two foul shots at the 23-second mark (74-69) and McNamara had one free throw with 15 seconds left to end the game.
Rowan is home again on Saturday, February 1 against William Paterson University at 1 p.m.
