Women's Basketball Falls at New Jersey City, 61-57

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Rowan University dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest at New Jersey City University, 61-57 on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Profs are now 4-14 overall and they are 3-8 in the NJAC. The Gothic Knights have an overall mark of 6-12 and a conference record of 3-8.
 
NJCU had three players score in double figures. Guard Ashley Vazquez (jr. Jersey City, NJ/Marist) had 23 points. Forward Bria Smith (fr. Bayonne, NJ/St. Dominic Academy) tallied 13 points and nine rebounds. Guard Jade Medley (jr. Queens, NY/Hudson Catholic) added 12 points. Vazquez and Medley grabbed six rebounds apiece.
 
Center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds for Rowan. Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) scored 12 points and corralled six rebounds, while guard Alex Raring (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) added eight points and six boards. Guard Jade Bonder (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) dished out six assists.
 
Schullstrom tied the game at 56 with a three-pointer at the 1:31 mark of the second half. Medley gave NJCU a 58-56 lead with a layup (0:17). Schullstrom's free throw with 10-seconds on the clock cut the deficit to one point, 58-57. Vazquez made a free throw (0:05) then Medley grabbed an offensive rebound on the second free throw attempt. She hit a layup (0:03) to conclude the scoring.
 
The Gothic Knights led 51-41 (9:21) after a pair of free throws by center Alnisa Hernaiz (sr. Irvington, NJ/Irvington). The Profs scored nine straight points to get to within one, 51-50 (5:38). Guard Valerie Garofalo (fr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) and Raring each had four points, while guard Anyssa Sanchez (fr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling).
 
NJCU started the game on a 14-4 run that took 4:53 of the clock. Smith scored six points. Rowan tallied the next seven points, capped off by a Raring layup, making it 14-11 (12:49). The score was 21-18 after forward Megan Russ (sr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) hit a jumper at the 7:56 mark. Vazquez's jumper gave the Gothic Knights a 29-20 lead (3:44). Matthews tallied the final four points of the first half, making the score 31-26 at the break. She led all scorers with 11 points.
 
Rowan will host Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, January 29 at 8 p.m.
