Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ –The New Jersey City University men's basketball team defeated Rowan University, 65-56 in a conference game on Saturday.
Forward Walik Albright (sr. Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) led the Gothic Knights with 20 points and seven rebounds. Guard Jamall McDaniel (jr. Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) scored 16 points. Guard Jourdan Roberson (jr. Brooklyn, NY/University (Newark)) contributed with 15 points and six boards. Forward Faraji James (so. Irvington, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) grabbed seven rebounds.
NJCU is 10-7 overall and 6-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rowan has an 8-10 record and a 3-8 conference mark.
For the Profs, guards Tim McDaniels (sr. Mount Holly, NJ/Lenape) and Phil Jackson (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) each scored 11 points. Guard Rich McNamara (sr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) produced a game-high 11 rebounds. Guard Jason Rosenberg (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and McNamara added nine points apiece. Forward Jason Sofman (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) registered eight boards and guard Kris O'Connor (so. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) had seven points.
The Gothic Knights started the second half with a five point advantage (26-21). Sofman's tip-in (17:51) pulled Rowan within three (29-26). New Jersey City followed with a 7-0 spurt to lead 36-26 at 14:44. Albright and James each had a basket while Roberson nailed a three. Jackson made two free throws with 9:44 remaining and the Profs trailed by five points (43-38). Albright's layup and foul shot at 9:02 made the score 47-38. McDaniels had two foul shots (4:48), O'Connor hit a jumper (4:23) and Rowan was down by five points (50-45). McDaniel's basket gave NJCU a nine-point advantage (60-51) with 1:44 left. Jackson cut the deficit to six (60-54) with a free throw (1:31) and a layup (1:22). The Gothic Knights ended the game with a 5-2 run and all five points were at the line. Albright and McDaniel led with 10 points apiece in the second stanza.
In the first half, New Jersey City was ahead by eight points (15-7) after Roberson's three-pointer at 12:35. Albright's jumper made the score 19-9 at the 10:19 mark. Jackson had a basket at 9:12 and the Profs were down by seven points (19-12). Roberson sank two free throws (5:12) to lead 26-16. McNamara had a layup (4:50) and O'Connor followed with a three (1:13) to trail 26-21 at the break.
Rowan's next game is at home against Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, January 29 at 6 p.m.
