GLASSBORO, NJ – The Montclair State University women's basketball team won 77-55 at Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Thursday night.
Forward Melissa Tobie (jr. Elizabeth, NJ/Roselle Catholic) scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Guard Janitza Aquino (jr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) contributed with 20 points. Guard Nicosia Henry (sr. Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) totaled 13 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Kayla Ceballos (so. Brooklyn, NY/Christ the King) added nine points and guard Jenny Malone (jr. North Plainfield, NJ/Roselle Catholic) dished six assists.
The Red Hawks, ranked 13th in the nation, are 15-2 overall and 9-1 in the conference. The Profs have a 4-13 record and a 3-7 NJAC mark.
For Rowan, guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (so. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) produced 13 points. Guard Bria Hill (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) registered nine points and guard Jade Bonder (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) followed with seven. Guards Alex Raring (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and Anyssa Sanchez (fr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) and center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) each had six points. Sanchez also tallied seven rebounds.
In the first half, Rowan trailed 14-11 after a three-pointer by Schullstrom. Montclair State scored 12 straight points for a 15-point advantage (26-11) at 11:25. Aquino contributed with five points, Tobie hit a three while forward Sage Bennett (fr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) and Henry each had a basket. Aquino's layup with 10:17 remaining made the score 28-17. The Profs followed with a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to one (30-29) at 5:27. Five different players produced points in the surge. Schullstrom had a layup (2:14) and Rowan was down by four points (38-34). Matthews' basket (0:46) and Ceballos' layup (0:05) ended the scoring. The Red Hawks were ahead 42-36 at the break. Tobie and Aquino both scored 15 points in the first period while Schullstrom totaled 13.
Montclair State led 51-40 at 16:52 after a three-pointer by Aquino in the second stanza. The Red Hawks were up 51-42 at 16:25 then they pulled away with 15 unanswered points in 5:54. Montclair had a 24-point lead (66-42) with 10:31 left. Henry scored seven points and Tobie had five in the run. Ceballos added a basket and Bennett made a free throw. The Red Hawks' largest lead was 27 points (71-44) with a layup by Tobie at 7:23.
Rowan travels to conference opponent New Jersey City University on Saturday, January 25 for a 2 p.m. contest.
