Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ –The Rowan University men's basketball team edged conference opponent Montclair State University, 67-66 on Thursday night.
The Profs had four players that scored in double figures. Forward Jason Sofman (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) led the way with 16 points and guard Tim McDaniels (sr. Mount Holly, NJ/Lenape) chipped in with 14. Guard Rich McNamara (sr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Phil Jackson (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added 11 points off the bench. Guard Jason Rosenberg (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) collected eight assists.
Rowan improves to 8-9 on the season and 3-7 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Montclair State has a 6-10 record with a 3-7 conference mark.
Guard Daniel Singleton (sr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) led the Red Hawks with 19 points. Forward Ordel Goldson (sr. Hackettstown, NJ/Warren Hills) contributed with 15 points and seven boards. Guard Angel Gonzalez (so. Ocala, FL/Meadowbrook Academy) registered 13 points. Forward Chris Torres (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) grabbed 10 rebounds and scored eight points.
The score was tied three times in the second half. Torres' layup knotted the score at 59 with 2:35 left. Rowan guard Kris O'Connor (so. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) followed with a layup (2:07). Gonzalez hit a three (1:35) and Montclair State had its last lead, 62-61. McNamara had a basket (1:20) and McDaniels made two foul shots for a three-point advantage (65-62) with 1:05 on the clock. O'Connor's layup at the 27 mark made the score 67-63. With 20 seconds remaining, Singleton had a basket and was fouled. He nailed the free throw. The Profs turned the ball over then the Red Hawks missed a three-pointer (0:05) and a jumper (0:01). McNamara scored 11 of his 13 points in the second period.
Montclair State started the game with a 7-2 run in 2:27. Gonzalez sank a three at 17:33 for a five-point advantage (7-2). The Profs trailed by one (11-10) after Sofman's layup (15:05). Singleton had a basket to lead 23-19 with 10:11 remaining. McDaniels followed with a three-pointer at 8:30 to pull within one. Gonzalez hit a three (6:13) and Goldson had a dunk (5:19) to lead 30-24. Sofman sank two foul shots (2:26) and the Profs were down by one point (32-31). Singleton made the first of two free throws with 1:38 left. Sofman's basket tied the score at 33 with 41 seconds on the clock. With one second remaining, O'Connor's layup gave the Profs the lead 35-33. Singleton was the scoring leader in the period with 11 points while Sofman collected 10.
