Box Score GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men's basketball team won 85-68 over Berkeley College in the final game of the Rohrer College of Business Classic on Thursday night. With the victory, the Profs recorded their 11th tournament title.
The College of Faith dropped out of the classic, which was held on December 13 and 14. On the first night, Rowan defeated the University of Maine at Fort Kent, 91-66. The next day, Berkeley had a 74-67 win over Maine at Fort Kent.
Rowan improves to 7-5 on the season while Berkeley has an 8-7 record. Guard Tim McDaniels (sr. Mount Holly, NJ/Lenape) scored 20 points. Guard Rich McNamara (sr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Guards Matt Whitworth (sr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) and Kris O'Connor (so. Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) contributed with 13 and 12 points off the bench. Forward Jason Sofman (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) chipped in with 10 points and six boards.
For the Knights, center Vince Richmond (fr. Newark, NJ/Ridgefield) totaled 20 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Dukens Germain (so. Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) produced 13 points and 12 boards. Guard Hassan Abdullah (so. Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) added 12 points.
McDaniels, Whitworth and McNamara were named to the All-Classic Team. They were joined by Berkeley guard William Morton (fr. Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) and Richmond.
The Profs started the game with a 15-2 run in 5:55. McDaniels scored six points and Jackson followed with five while guard Jason Rosenberg (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and Sofman each added two. O'Connor's layup increased the advantage to 15 (19-4) at 11:16. Whitworth hit a jumper at 7:46, which made the score 25-15. The Knights trailed by five (25-20) after a layup by Richmond and a three from Abdullah with 7:12 remaining. Rowan led by 14 points (36-22) on Whitworth's three-pointer at 4:28. With 1:04 on the clock, Berkeley pulled within 10 points (41-31) following two foul shots by Germain. Rowan ended the period with a 6-2 spurt for a 14-point advantage at the break. McDaniels and Richmond had 10 points apiece in the first half.
In the second stanza, Germain sank two free throws (17:59) and the Knights were down by 10 points (47-37). McDaniels had a layup and a foul shot at 14:26 to lead 56-43. McNamara made a layup and center Dan Brogan (so. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) followed with a foul shot for a 17 point advantage (65-48) with 11:07 left. Whitworth's two free throws at 7:35 put the Profs up by 20 points (73-53). Rowan had its biggest lead of 21 points (81-60) at 5:01 and (83-62) at 4:19. The first time McDaniels had a foul shot and the second he hit a jumper. McNamara and McDaniels scored 11 and 10 points respectively in the second half.
Rowan's next game is at home on January 8 against conference opponent The College of New Jersey at 6 p.m.
